Michael F I was very moved by this touching film about a Scottish couple settling in Wisconsin and the hardships they endure. Have a box of tissues nearby when their 6 orphaned children must find homes. Never knew of this film till I saw it on TCM. It's well worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review James C A heartbreaking movie about a you boy that has to divide up his family after both parents died. I sure things like this did happen back in the days of heavy disease and short life span. We had seven kids in our family. I lost my father at 21. My!mother bought the DVD for all of us kids for Christmas one year. We didn't know she would pass away less than three months later. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Cute movie, it's a unique premise but definitely a sad one. Halfway through it just gets sadder and sadder until it gets to the sad ending. The fact that the first half is so warm and cozy just makes it even sadder. I know that doesn't sound like a movie worth watching, but I promise you it is. Just be prepared to cry. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Not expecting this to go anywhere, it is surprising when the main thrust of the film begins. This is something that would have happened in mid nineteenth century Wisconsin. It's happy and sad all at once, and it's hard to tear your attention away from the screen. This one's a winner and well worth watching. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Frances H SAW THIS AS A CHILD AND THEN AGAIN JUST NOW. IT CERTAINLY WAS SAD, BUT TOLD A STORY THAT WAS TYPICAL IN THE 19TH CENTURY. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/18 Full Review Audience Member I first saw this about 50 years ago. It was on the late, late show and after I got home from work about 11:00 p.m., I joined my mom to watch TV. She told me this was the saddest movie I'd ever see. She fell asleep and when she woke up I was sobbing. I've watched it every year since and even bought it on tape although I no longer have a VCR. I search for it every Christmas.
