In the wake of the German invasion of Poland in 1939, Communist poet Aleksander Wat (Krzysztof Globisz) ; his devoted wife, Ola (Ewa Skibińska) ; and their young son, Andrzej Wat (Adas Siemion), attempt to flee Warsaw for the Soviet Union. In the midst of their chaotic exodus, Aleksander is apprehended. Ola and Andrzej escape, only to find themselves whisked away to a Soviet labor camp. There, Ola struggles to protect Andrzej from harm and vows to find Aleksander and reunite their family.
