      Critics Consensus

America: The Motion Picture is definitely outrageous and possibly patriotic -- problem is, it's also not very funny.

Dennis R This movie is packed with background gags, jokes and references and all around extremely layered. The movie is an absolute blast from start to finish. If you're a fan of the Lonely Island, Archer and Futurama you cannot miss this one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/06/23 Full Review Aiden This is just a really bad and unfunny movie on Netflix Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/23 Full Review Ryan S The movie is incredibly stupid, but aware of how stupid it is. Good movie to throw on in the background while doing something else. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/27/23 Full Review J E Dumb comedy is one thing... But this wasn't a dumb satire of comedy, it was just dumb. Good chances at jokes were used but we're wasted on this medium. It was almost watchable but while I'm not expecting anything close to historical due to the satire the satire/comedy wasn't enough to push past some of the outstandingly dumb things they had historical figures do. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/10/23 Full Review Guy S There are plenty of levels of satire here, and it's not a bad or humorless movie due to the fact that some people don't understand them all, or don't find them funny. The fact that much of the humor is (seems) ham-handed is itself a satire on how America as a country (and many of its constituents (in both meanings of the word) exist/function. Who's to say Abe and George weren't childhood buddies? Were you there? If you know how full of BS the conventional history of the USA is, the few hundred modifications here wouldn't bother you; you'd see them for the satiric web of culture they are. I think it's easy to dismiss the movie as sloppy or humorless unless you really spend some time to think about it; and I'll grant that messing with accepted history makes most of us anxious/nervous/unsure of what else we may not know/might get skewered unacceptably. But this is a funny movie if you give it some of your consideration. Was interested that James = Henry = George - but those Brits ARE all alike, right? Steve Greene indieWire Most of the time, it's knowingly stupid, which makes watching it 90 minutes of occasional fun and frequent indifference. Rated: C Jul 1, 2021 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Even when you think it's only acting rude and juvenile just because, it's much smarter than that, particularly whenever it skewers American attitudes (both conservative and liberal). Rated: 3/4 Jul 1, 2021 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com Rarely have I seen a movie so confident that its audience not only revels in American benightedness but is eager to identify with it. That makes America: The Motion Picture not only a waste of time but an insult to ignoramuses. Jul 1, 2021 Full Review Maxance Vincent InSession Film It’s a film that desperately tries to make us laugh but fails miserably with horribly dated pop culture and meta-references, soulless animation, and many offensive stereotypes to boot. Rated: D Mar 5, 2024 Full Review Mat Brunet AniMat's Review (YouTube) America: The Motion Picture is so stupid that it has no idea of how stupid it is, valuing so much of its comedic style over any form of substance that results in one of the most irritating animated features to watch. Rated: 3/10 Feb 16, 2022 Full Review Witney Seibold Critically Acclaimed Podcast A view of history from people raised on G.I. Joe cartoons and nothing else. Its ridiculousness is weirdly exciting, even if its satire isn't quite as sharp as it could be. Oct 7, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
