Dirk W American Blue Note is a quirky little indie 1989 film, which didn't find a distributor until 1991. It turned up on UK television in the early 1990s and I loved it. One showing only, not since but a few years ago (after the film had been 'rediscovered' and released as part of a film festival in 2013), it came out on a manufacture on demand DVD from Amazon US. This is a wonderful film, almost a series of vignettes formingg the whole - a very naturalistic film about a jazz ensemble trying to get into the jazz clubs on 42nd Street in the 1960s but consigned to weddings, bar mitzvahs, way out of town bars etc., never getting the breaks. It has lots of humour, courtesy of Peter MacNicol as the Jack Solow, the bandleader and alto saxophonist and the other cast members include Carl Capotorto as Jerry, Tim Guinee as Bobby, Bill Christopher-Myers as Lee, Jonathan Walker as Tommy and Charlotte d'Amboise as Benita. Without spoiling it, check out the hilarious scene with a gas station attendant co-opted into the band and the ballet show scene, with the band jazzing up Tchaikovsky! Director Ralph Toporoff penned the screenplay with Gilbert Girion and the diegetic and extra diegetic music courtesy of Larry Schanker. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/27/24 Full Review Audience Member American Blue Note is a little seen, underrated gem of a film. The acting is naturalistic, the humorous moments not forced but emanate from the characters. The music is great. Highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
