See more Blu B Oct 17 A Classic Period Piece Crime Drama. The acting is the highlight and really good all around. The characters are all very flawed, complex, stand out, interesting, and very well acted. Adams is the best one out of everyone. They all got good chemistry with each other. Sometimes I wish the dialouge was a bit sharper though. Everything else is solid with decent direction. Some shots are a bit basic but it does have lots of production value and they do a great job nailing the 70's look. The biggest problem here I feel is this comes off a bit bloated. This is trying to be a crime heist movie, a crime drama, and a love triangle romance. To it's credit it makes it all work and the twist is good at the end. The problem is it really jumps around at certain points in the film and executes some things better than others at times. The first half the character development is stronger than the actual crime plot. In the middle it becomes more about the crime setup and romance than the drama. So some things like the relationship with Lawrence/Bale feel like they are seperate films almost at times. Than in the end it's all crime related and the romance parts just feel left by the wayside. And it jumps around a bit between Bale, Lawrence, Adams, and Cooper in the middle also while doing this but again to its credit it all makes perfect sense. Thought the actual crime setup does get muddled with the Arab Financier, Mafia, and the particulars are hard to follow sometimes more so than others. I do wish they did a better job fitting Lawrence in again because her scenes and relationship with Bale feel completely seperate. Regardless it's still well done, got a nice twist, interesting characters, and I like the 70's tracks. Amazing acting especially from Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, and Christian Bale. Yes, it circles back and ends “happily,” but it was a pleasure to watch; I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was very nice to see women characters figure so strongly in the plotline. And it was fun to catch the DeNiro stock mob boss cameo, speaking Arabic no less. See more Read all reviews
