Critics Consensus

Riotously funny and impeccably cast, American Hustle compensates for its flaws with unbridled energy and some of David O. Russell's most irrepressibly vibrant direction.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online It's enjoyable and fun to watch, but just barely touches the surface of its own narrative. Rated: B- Sep 6, 2017 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk It's a sly film that slips through your fingers, leaving the glitter of great performances, but one you'll be hustling to watch again. Rated: 4/5 Sep 6, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire A movie as smart as 'American Hustle' knows that those tactile pleasures only matter if they're attached to some kind of emotional resonance. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Allison Rose FlickDirect From acting to directing and costumes to sets, American Hustle offers the total package as far as filmmaking goes. Rated: 4.5/5 May 29, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “American Hustle” is more of a showcase of great actors than it is great storytelling, but it still keeps you glued to the screen as you watch them do their work. Rated: 4/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Russell manages to make these characters at once despicable and loveable, complicated and weighty, none of them irredeemable, each of them incurably watchable. Tom S What a fake mess with endless talking. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/24 Full Review Marcus B A fantastic movies with stellar acting throughout. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/06/24 Full Review Allen F This is just an all around great movie with amazing actors and a great story Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Lucio Leonardo P Too good for you. Some more discerning critics sought comparison, which I think is unnecessary. Director David O. Russell brings us a good story showing how there are people who use their intelligence to deceive people. And how there are people who are easily deceived by the moment of despair. As there are thiefs who deceive thiefs (and no 100 years of forgiveness.). And how there are individuals who deceive themselves. The plot holds our attention from beginning to end and all the actors are impeccable in their roles. I would say that the plot deals with the matter in a light way, because in real life the consequences could be much worse, but it is not impossible that it will not end like it does here. Christian Bale “is the name”, being the protagonist and the best in acting followed by the others. And the soundtrack is very well selected. I liked it, it's light and with homework to reflect on: how much is it worth cheating and lying without falling into cheating? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/04/24 Full Review Cass S Very slow and boring movie. You keep waiting for something interesting to happen and then the end is disappointing. It's a more of a movie about cheating spouses than anything else. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Shioka O High-budgeted comedy. I like con films and I liked the soundtrack and the actors. It's entertaining too. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
