A nice little 90s action film that did a half ass job with its story of an undercover fbi agent infiltrates the Yakuza and is torn between his world of law and order.

A very superficial gangster movie that, once again, idolizes and deifies a gang organization, the Yakuza. The plot is extremely basic and cobbled together from other, better made movies. The director tries to be very stylized with different filming angles, lighting and long set-up shots, that ll amounts to nothing more than a distraction. Given the minimal plot, most of the film is filler to a story that could have been told in half an hour.

American Yakuza is a time passer and one that deserved a better filmmaker at the helm. Viggo Mortensen carries this film the entire way and without him it would've been relegated to the depths of obscurity. The film is short and offers a little twist on the standard undercover storyline. The action scenes are quite bad, but it's one of those films that are bad they are still fun. This could have been an interesting film. 05/08/2019

Like low-budget Black Rain. Viggo Mortensen is the balls in this early role. Robert Forster adds some extra class as his boss. The action is very John Woo but overall decent.
