Michelle Orange Village Voice The film veers into the narrow channels of the bare-bulb courtroom melodrama and then the rapids of the lurid conspiracy thriller before washing ashore in pieces. Mar 29, 2011 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Very good Indy film taking into account the limited budget at hand! We have a young professional married couple that adopts a baby and live in New Jersey. The couple played by Candice Holdorf and Elissa Goldstein as Terry and Samantha Succi) are in reality two gay women. Under false pretenses they obtain a marriage license and adopt a baby boy. They obtained their benefits and paid their taxes through the same fraudulent pretext of being husband and wife...And they did so because of state law that discriminates against homosexual partners. The authorities are tipped about them and rather than accepting a quiet plea deal, they go to trial to defend their rights. What ensues is a massive media covered courtroom battle, with equally divided views and equally plotted acts of legal - and illegal - warfare. BRAVO to the cast and crew of An Affirmative Act because it sends the message loud and clear that what was done to this couple was wrong and discriminatory. The director Jana Mattioli directed like a champ and overall this is another uplifting motion picture addressing discriminatory laws that currently take place across America. I am thankful to live in a progressive state where I believe that same sex marriage will become legal, not because it impacts me but because my conscience and morals dictate that it is the right and fair decision to uphold. RECOMMENDED!!! Available on Netflix instant streaming..
