DanTheMan 2 A straightforward but powerfully told revenge yarn, And God Said to Cain, quickly evolves into something much more sinister with its fusion of gothic horror, a western with the lights turned off. Windows suddenly blow open with the wind, strange sounds are heard rattling around the town, and Klaus Kinski goes bump in the night. The pacing is terrific, as we get stretches of high-strung tension interspersed with bursts of sudden violence, a testament to the direction of Antonio Margheriti, who manages to expertly mesh the two genres into an atmosphere of unnerving creeping dread. Kinski's Winchester serves him like the scythe serves Death. He sets out to kill only the bad guys and never deviates from his objective, sweeping into town with the full force of a cyclone, wielding death with the same finality that slasher villains would do in the 80s. It is fun seeing Kinski sneak up on unsuspecting fools and dispatch them. Several times during the film, people are unintentionally shot and killed because they are mistaken for Kinski. Such is the power of one man to keep the whole town on edge. It's certainly one of his more unique performances, being heavily understated in his delivery, he's the big draw here, and it's a shame the rest of the cast is merely servicable by comparison. The use of organ music, courtesy of Carlo Savina, adds a lot to the gothic atmosphere, although the main theme is as corny as they come and doesn't fit the mood the rest of the film excels at. While at times you might find yourself squinting to see anything that's going on, And God Said to Cain is a real treat for fans of horror and westerns alike, a brilliant blending of the two distinct genres where the bell tolls for everyone. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review Audience Member A unique western with a prominent horror element throughout, and Klaus Kinski as our protagonist! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member And God Said to Cain has a unique atmosphere to it of escalating tension that plays out in a brilliant climax. Although, the film pretty much proves that a spaghetti western without Ennio Morricone almost doesn't work. But the score is still decent. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't like Kinski and most of the western movies out there but this one was pretty good. good 3/5 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Finally, Kinski as a lead in a western, which happens to be a very atmospheric flick, thanks to the direction of horror veteran Antonio Margheriti. The story is 100% straightfoward, it's in the mood and style where the movie gets it's identity. This is what sets apart a dull and lifeless flick like "God Forgives" from a movie with an actual personality like this one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews
