Dave C It's a well-presented Victorian-era psychosexual mystery with a Freudian allegory as its supernatural antagonist. Unfortunately, given that we know all of that (and that there is little else to know about the haunting presence), the story is weakened and doesn't hold any horror or suspense. The costumes, settings, and cinematography are all stellar. It's evident that the director lets this get away from him, focussing more on his ideas than on their successful execution Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/29/23 Full Review hasan bulut c it is a dark gothic horror. it is a bit slow but definitely worth watching it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Inexplicably slow. A storyline with no real substance. An ending which makes little sense. Not worth spending time on. Kristy Puchko Pajiba Angelica feels like Alias Grace meets The Babadook. Nov 21, 2017 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times This is an alternately handsome and harrowing ghost story, about a civilized society haunted by its own unspeakable needs. Nov 16, 2017 Full Review Danielle White Austin Chronicle The supernatural elements brush up against some heavy topics, some actual real-life horrors, but like any encounter with a ghost, Angelica is likely to simply leave you cold. Rated: 1.5/5 Nov 16, 2017 Full Review Anton Bitel Projected Figures Combining (aptly) stuffy domestic drama with the psychological ambiguities of a ghost story, Angelica leaves us unsure whether Constance's actions are a product of delusion or enlightenment. Apr 11, 2020 Full Review John Higgins Starburst It is a rare treat to encounter a period horror film which says a lot about the relationship between man and woman and man-versus-nature, whilst providing a satisfyingly eerie psychological drama. Rated: 9/10 Dec 14, 2017 Full Review Andrew Winter Film Inquiry Angelica is a slow burn but rewards patience as the director takes his time to lay out his themes, introduce his characters and slowly ratchet up the melodrama.
