Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The film isn’t able to disguise its Z-grade budget, which carries over into the use of rinky-dink sets and props and costumes. Rated: 2/10 Jul 20, 2024 Full Review Alberto Abuín Espinof The results are quite mediocre, although they can be appreciated with some sympathy. Rated: 2/5 Dec 28, 2004 Full Review Bob Bloom Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN) Very bad special effects mar this only-average s-f excursion. Only the giant rat-bat-whatever creature has any flair. CodyZamboni Z Watchable, cheap looking tale of a mission to Mars, And battling the aliens that live there, Annoying use of red filter helped keep the budget in check, That said, there are some startling fx of a giant spider bat creature, But most of the cartoony fx are lame, Crew members are mostly annoying, except for the female lead, Kudos to filmmakers to have strong female lead in a 50s sci fi horror, a rarity for its' time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Ted B 2.0 stars; Okay. Back in 1959, many scientists believed there were canals on Mars due to an optical illusion when using telescopes at the time. So any stories about Mars were fair game regarding its inhabitants. This movie was the type of sci-fi we were watching at the drive-ins in those days (those that were watching the movies). These movies seem like spoofs today, but they were dealing with the little knowledge they had about Mars then, as well as rocket science. The production and special effects were fairly low budget. Most of the actors were well experienced in the sci-fi genre. So they gave it some authority in the acting part of the film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Dallas H I think the visual effects for the Mars excursions in this movie were way more creative than what Steven Soderbergh did with the monochromatic camera filters for Traffic (2000). However, the set pieces on the spaceship and the monster creature puppets on Mars are corny and cheesy. From the start, I knew this movie would be the expected quality of a B-movie from the late fifties. Even so, I still got a kick out of it. The story is a bit simple, and the dialogue is sometimes shallow. How often can you say "Irish" as a nickname for Iris? In this movie, it was pretty frequently. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Audience Member I have a soft spot for vintage, retro movies, specially the sci-fi/Horror genre. I always find some scene or idea that were borrowed or inspired, in other current films. Unlucky for me, it wasn't the case here. There is absolutely nothing redeemable about this turkey. From the casting of the crew, (the captain looks more like a washed up lounge singer, with his trusty side-kick, Costello comedy relief wannabe), to that horrible red filter, to hide the awful fact, that most of mars landscape shots were flat, one dimensional, badly drawn canvas drawings. The story itself made absolutely, no sense, just a bunch of random scenes held together with laughable puppet monsters. Most of the movie takes place on a 10 by 10 command center set, with that one round window. Each actors taking turns, looking out, grimacing, blurring out lines like, "This is an angry planet" and "There's something terrible here" Yep, we know... It's this movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Very intense great monster scene. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Has one of the creepiest creatures I've seen in a while....Gerald Mohr (plays the captain)...that dude would make any woman run in the opposite direction, looks like an alcoholic, chain smoker, wife beater type...slimier than any of the Martian monsters. Otherwise, typical 50's sci-fi movie Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
