What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dazzling, but a little dull, ANIARA's impeccable production design is undermined by its underwhelming philosophical pondering.

A haunting allegorical tale, Aniara warns of humanity hurtling in the wrong direction and realising too late that there is no turning back. Go to Full Review

A cold, cruel, piercingly humane sci-fi parable that's both bang on the zeitgeist and yet also unnervingly original. Go to Full Review

Kågerman and Lilja craft a visionary film—one that is profoundly despairing yet also worthy of comparison to the great existential space epics Go to Full Review

A deep, probing meditation on the acceptance of one’s place in the universe... Aniara might be a ship without a destination but this film is ultimately destined to become a timeless sci-fi classic. Go to Full Review

Francis S Nov 17 They could have done a lot of things with such a good plot, but decided to be amateurs and go for the low hanging, low IQ fruit, with the end result being an unimaginative ramble with no character development whatsoever and no reason to watch this train wreck. They could have at least made a character out of outer space, which would have been more profound than any of the characters in this film, but they missed that too, showing very few scenes of space. See more Lucifer M Nov 11 This film genuinely depressed me. It’s bleak, depressing and heartbreaking. With phenomenal performances and beautiful cinematography with incredible VFX, this is a film you do not want to miss out on. A melancholic cautionary tale for humanity of the dangers of taking our world for granted and what our last resort would look like. You’ve been warned though; it is very bleak. Much weirder than I expected, but in a good way! It has an underlying energy of a climate disaster movie, with a baked-in message about our current exploitation of our planet's resources, reminding us of the insane gift that Earth is. The film was more artsy than I anticipated, too. As the movie goes on, it gets pretty moody, leaving space for some interpretation, especially when it’s exploring the theme of human insignificance in the vastness of space and time. See more Chris K Apr 3 This is not your typical sci-fi movie. It has excellent cinematography, direction, writing and acting. The ending is not what you'd expect in a movie, but probably what you'd expect in reality. See more Read all reviews
