Kevin Maher Times (UK) It's also incredibly uneven, visually overworked and frequently substitutes noisy kinetic action for actual narrative momentum. Rated: 2/5 Jun 29, 2018 Full Review Ian Freer Empire Magazine It's overstuffed, disjointed and suffers from storytelling longueurs but there is so much filmmaking invention and spurts of nutty energy it adds up to a thoroughly enjoyable romp. Jun 29, 2018 Full Review Leslie Felperin Guardian What he fails to explain is who director Han Yan and the producers think they were making this movie for, because it's extremely nerdy stuff, however many killer clown fantasy sequences are dropped in. Rated: 3/5 Jun 29, 2018 Full Review Alix Turner Ready Steady Cut Animal World is an exciting and intelligent Chinese adaptation of a Japanese manga from director Yan Han. A bit more style than substance, but I don't care: loved it. Rated: 4/5 Feb 2, 2021 Full Review Grant Watson VCinema As a stand-alone feature, Animal World is over-the-top, dripping with excess, and genuinely rather odd. Rated: 7/10 May 2, 2019 Full Review Alex Lines Film Inquiry It's not perfect, but big bold swings like this never are - I'd take a messy, but genuinely innovative feature like this any day over the parade of generic blockbusters offered up at most matinees. Mike W Entertaining and interesting. There are a lot of cool visual effects. Worth the watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/26/22 Full Review Audience Member i thought this was fantastic. a lot of the reviews talk ill of all the CGI sequences, but they were honestly my favorite parts; entertaining af. it gets a little dull in the middle where the story is starting to develop, but i still enjoyed it. & the fact that Michael Douglass is the bad guy?! hilarious. 10/10 would recommend. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member It is good in the sense that it is original in the concept and some aspects of how it chooses to develop the plot, however... some important aspects of the plot do not go anywhere and almost seem like an excuse for a theme, considering they kinda break with the mood of the film at times, making it seem outrageous and exaggerated. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Basically a cheap ripoff of "Liar Game". It's not new and it's not unique. Unnecessary fantasy CGI bulk, needless matrix-style panning, weird clown fetish, and a flimsy plot with no purpose other than to be extravagant. The Protagonist also has 8th-grade syndrome. Moreover it took about 20 minutes to actually get on the darn boat for the main synopsis. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Its visually entertaining. If u were interested in a movie about a life or death high stakes game of rock paper scissors then this is the movie for you. Anything sword or clown related is tangential and is touched on but underdeveloped and unrelated as to wonder if it would only be fully fleshed out in a planned sequel which is setup at the end. Characters are likeable. Movie is watchable. A couple movies with slightly similar themes that i'd prioritize if u had limited time would be snowpiercer, and the platform (el hoyo).
