John Form (Ward Horton) thinks he's found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia (Annabelle Wallis) : a vintage doll in a beautiful white dress. However, the couple's delight doesn't last long: One terrible night, devil worshippers invade their home and launch a violent attack against the couple. When the cultists try to summon a demon, they smear a bloody rune on the nursery wall and drip blood on Mia's doll, thereby turning the former object of beauty into a conduit for ultimate evil.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Annabelle borrows unabashedly from better horror films, content to leave viewers with a string of cheap jolts that fail to build on the far more effective The Conjuring.

Richard Corliss TIME Magazine Quality is often irrelevant in a horror movie; shock is the key. Oct 16, 2014 Full Review Bruce Diones The New Yorker The script, by Gary Dauberman, is a clichd mess, lacking humor and surprises. But Leonetti stages some fright-worthy sequences ... Oct 13, 2014 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) The scares are orchestrated with more flair than usual, even if the best of them are all spoiled in the trailer. Rated: 3/5 Oct 11, 2014 Full Review Brian Bisesi Horror Movie Club Podcast Though the film has the solid production design, cinematography and score that one can typically expect from The Conjuring Universe, the story and its characters are dull, lifeless, and generic. Rated: 2/5 Nov 29, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Annabelle” often teases us with what it potentially could have been. It lays out a promising premise but it never goes beyond the routine run-of-the-mill horror flick that we have seen over and over. Reymund S It was just mind blowing on the big screen! Annabelle is not to be missed!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Oliver L Scary. Ok plot but definitely not that good. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/25/25 Full Review Joshua H. Not terrible but definitely lacking in story Has plenty of jump scares if you like that Does have a couple of decent scares Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/23/25 Full Review Tom M It looks at first like it's shot on video. I thought I might be watching some made for tv movie about a generic happy couple. But there was always something going on underneath. The acting is better than these films usually deserve. The scares are the usual horror tropes.but I stuck with it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/23/25 Full Review Joey W Annabelle is terrifying, it is worse than cujo, don't let your kids watch it, and also, it is even worse than the Simpsons Halloween special which is treehouse of horror Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Reyansh K Supa scawy, I peed my pants. The movie was alright as the plot was chill but the delivery was very very bad. I needed Aaron Arcos Hetherington to save me from the scawiness.
