John Form (Ward Horton) thinks he's found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia (Annabelle Wallis) : a vintage doll in a beautiful white dress. However, the couple's delight doesn't last long: One terrible night, devil worshippers invade their home and launch a violent attack against the couple. When the cultists try to summon a demon, they smear a bloody rune on the nursery wall and drip blood on Mia's doll, thereby turning the former object of beauty into a conduit for ultimate evil.

Critics Consensus

Annabelle borrows unabashedly from better horror films, content to leave viewers with a string of cheap jolts that fail to build on the far more effective The Conjuring.

Richard Corliss TIME Magazine Quality is often irrelevant in a horror movie; shock is the key. Oct 16, 2014 Full Review Bruce Diones New Yorker The script, by Gary Dauberman, is a clichd mess, lacking humor and surprises. But Leonetti stages some fright-worthy sequences ... Oct 13, 2014 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) The scares are orchestrated with more flair than usual, even if the best of them are all spoiled in the trailer. Rated: 3/5 Oct 11, 2014 Full Review Brian Bisesi Horror Movie Club Podcast Though the film has the solid production design, cinematography and score that one can typically expect from The Conjuring Universe, the story and its characters are dull, lifeless, and generic. Rated: 2/5 Nov 29, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Annabelle” often teases us with what it potentially could have been. It lays out a promising premise but it never goes beyond the routine run-of-the-mill horror flick that we have seen over and over. Max H Nope so disappointed everyone hyped it up too much.... boring plot, not scary, overused scenes from other horror movies. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review Deontae D An ok horror movie, But not good as the conjuring, But it's still a creepy movie, I can tell at the end it gone be another Annabelle movie, Annabelle creation is more better than this one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/09/24 Full Review Jinnifer F I could've done better if the plot wasn't so dull. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Audience Member This spin off from the conjuring about Annabelle the haunted doll is utterly boring and gives the true story no justice. Great opportunity wasted. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review Audience Member A horror film masterpiece. An under-appreciated movie that executes a variety of frightening scare tactics coupled with a great storyline and excellent photography. You will absolutely be frightened watching this film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/24 Full Review Ryan n This movie is the pinnacle of garbage, my reasoning behind this, at 54 minutes and 15 seconds the rain window jump scare scared me horribly so I hope who ever was the director of this movie and requested this scene gets into a firey car accident, and at 58 minutes and 50 seconds the demon stair jumps are made me piss my pants so I hope who ever requested THAT scene gets terminally ill with anal cancer Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
