Jake Wilson Sydney Morning Herald Sometimes a creepy-looking doll is just a creepy-looking doll and no amount of repetition can make the sweet old song You Are My Sunshine even the slightest bit scary. Rated: 2/5 Aug 18, 2017 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer The film exists simply to get us somewhere we've already been, and so the level of invention in the storytelling declines right when it should be ramping up. Aug 17, 2017 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times For the first two acts, while Annabelle: Creation concerns itself with little girls checking under beds and investigating things that go bump in the night, it's equal to James Wan's Conjuring films. Rated: 3/5 Aug 15, 2017 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Sure, it will still feel very familiar, but I appreciated the practical effects over digital, the keen eye for tension-building, and the patient buildup. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Fletcher Powell KMUW - Wichita Public Radio It stops being fun and starts dwelling on pain. Jun 21, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review While defusing laughter often accompanies this sort of material, it's best employed when we're not laughing at the film. Big Red Good installment to the franchise Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/23 Full Review Ryan M Watching these for the first time in chronological order and I have to say this was much better than the nun. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/25 Full Review Dahiana M La mejor de las tres películas de Annabelle. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/14/25 Full Review David H Not as good as the first one, better than the third. Not a lot of scares, but better characters and few infuriatingly stupid moves. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/10/25 Full Review Hélio S UM bom filme de terror bem divertido Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/08/25 Full Review BadNews R Annabelle: Creation is the sequel to the first Annabelle film, which felt a bit lackluster and left a lot to be desired. Thankfully, this follow-up brings more energy, atmosphere, and creativity to the franchise—but even so, it still doesn’t fully deliver on the promise of a terrifying possessed doll story. The issue with Annabelle as a character is that she doesn’t actually “do” anything. She doesn’t walk around, attack people, or become animated like we might expect from a killer doll horror film. Instead, she functions more as a vessel of evil, haunting and manipulating events from the background. That concept is fine in theory, but it requires the story to constantly keep moving in order to stay engaging. Unfortunately, this film struggles to do that consistently. Annabelle herself has undeniably become an iconic figure in horror. She’s entered pop culture in a way that few horror characters manage—fans buy replicas of the doll, dress up as her for Halloween, and see her more as a fun, spooky staple than an actual source of fear. In the real world, she’s beloved. On-screen, however, she doesn’t always translate into genuine terror. The movie does eventually find its footing. About an hour in, the tension finally ramps up and the scares land better. The final 30 minutes are easily the strongest section of the film, bringing the kind of suspense and atmosphere you expect from a Conjuring universe story. But it takes a long time to get there, which makes the journey feel uneven. For me, the most telling sign of the film’s weakness is that I honestly forgot I had even watched it until I revisited it for this review. That says a lot about its memorability—or lack thereof. The writing doesn’t leave a strong impression, and while the main cast delivers solid performances, some of the side characters feel underdeveloped or misplaced. The director certainly tries, and there are moments of great atmosphere, but the movie never makes Annabelle truly frightening. She’s unsettling, sure, but never terrifying. The result is a film that’s decent, watchable, and worth a single viewing for horror fans, but not one that compels me to revisit. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
