Critics Consensus

Annette's experimental approach to its emotional extremes marks an ambitious, if not peculiar, return for director Leos Carax.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk At its core, this is a fraught love story of both romantic and paternal brokenness. Rated: 5/5 Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Anupama Chopra Film Companion Annette is beautiful, bonkers and genuinely moving. Nov 24, 2021 Full Review Esther Zuckerman Thrillist Perhaps the puppet Annette should be your bellwether: Either she remains as creepy as she sounds or she blinks her way into your heart. If it's the latter, you might be under Annette's spell. Nov 23, 2021 Full Review Lindsey Romain Nerdist Ultimately, Annette feels a little too much like its eponymous character: occasionally melodic, full of potential, but rather wooden underneath. Rated: 3/5 Feb 14, 2024 Full Review Hector A. Gonzalez The Movie Buff It dwells in melancholy while it blushes through sarcasm, ending in an ardent, touching while warring, and incandescent piece of bizarre cinema. Rated: A- Oct 12, 2023 Full Review Mauricio Jarufe Caballero Cinencuentro At times, it seems that Annette gets confused amongst its own numerous allegories and narrative games. irene weird movie, GREAT SOUNDTRACK, GREAT CINEMATOGRAPHY! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/03/21 Full Review Norma Jean Weird. Amazing storytelling. Great acting.. PHENOMENAL. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/20/21 Full Review Thomas N What I liked? The music was phenomenal !.... Amazing sets and costumes. It is an American Art Film. Not sure I understood the metaphor. It starts out very fun but, gets complicated. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/21 Full Review thomas O Imagine a musical movie written by one of your favorite bands since the late 70s with a great French Director amazing actors .. unbelievable cinematography.. and a robot baby! you are sitting in a beautiful theater in a recliner chair and the sound is amazing. I would have thought I was in a Fredrick Fellini film except the writers Ron and Russell Mael kept showing up in the movie!! I’m so lucky to be a Sparks fan so I found this Gem.. if you are a film student or love foreign films without sub titles this is a must see.. if you love a good movie that the masses won’t see .. this is a must see. If you have ever been to Niagara Falls at 3 am in January you know what I mean! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/23/21 Full Review Lili It was extraordinarily weird. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/15/21 Full Review Charles S While I love the actors (and often their specific scenes)....however, the overall movie is one of the very worst movies I have ever watched. I left about 4/5 into the film (as the ship scene began). It is like a cross between "La La Land" and "Lenny" (Bruce)....The film takes pride in its darkness and its moments of profane plot.
