Critics Consensus

Another marvelous chronicle of America's strivers by writer-director Sean Baker given some extra pizzazz by Mikey Madison's brassy performance, Anora is a romantic drama on the bleeding edge.

Flipping fairy tale lore upside down, Anora, like its titular anti-princess, may make you laugh and still break your heart.

Stephen Romei The Australian Anora is a grittier experience. All the performances are impressive and I will not be surprised if Madison receives an Oscar nomination. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald It’s a rollercoaster ride, yet Baker never confuses movement with action. Every twist takes you somewhere you hadn’t quite expected to be, revealing an emotion you hadn’t expected to share. Rated: 4/5 Dec 21, 2024 Full Review Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting As brazen and unapologetic as many of Baker’s characters are… There is a desperation and a dependency on others that Ani refuses to let define her. Rated: 4.5/5 Nov 23, 2024 Full Review Griffin Schiller FilmSpeak (Youtube) Anora may be the clearest example of class solidarity put to film in recent years. A f----d up Cinderella story about the ways in which our capitalistic society regularly makes financial security and uninhibited self-expression mutually exclusive... Rated: 4.5/5 Mar 9, 2025 Full Review A.S. Hamrah n+1 In the second section... we lose the Ani we’d come to know. Mar 4, 2025 Full Review Steve Crum Crum on Showbiz Up to and particularly including the last 30 minutes of this 139-minute gem of originality, I had zero idea where the story was going. R First hour was the two lead characters banging eachother in different places, 2nd hour was the Russian lapdogs holding Anora hostage in a mansion while she screamed for help, and the final arc was the two characters dealing with the repercussions of their honeymoon phase ending and reality kicking back in. Theres more compelling stories on the “hub”. Dont let the review schnobs and the academy gaslight you into thinking this is a one of a kind thought provoking drama. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review Nicki O From the very beginning there was a lot of sex and so many "F bombs". The entire went this way. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review bh there is no way that movie should have been rated R so that it could be shown in regular theaters. it was disgusting and took way too long to get to the "point" of the movie. I have no idea why it won all the awards it did at the Oscars. I can see Best actress but that's the only one. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review Joseph R This movie was garbage. It was 2 hours and 20 minutes I wish I could get back. This movie didn’t deserve the Best Picture Oscar and the other Oscars that it won. The acting was horrible and t wonder what the Academy was thinking when it gave Anora the best picture Oscar. Conclave and The Brutalist were better than Anora. Either one deserved the Best Picture Oscar over Anora. I don’t recommend this movie at all. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review Lisa Nothing happens until an hour or so into the movie. A lot of sex going on over and over and over again. I cannot believe this was the best movie award!! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review Daniel K First half seemed to be building to something and then we got some fun dark comedy in the middle, but ultimately Anora (the movie and the character) runs out of steam.
