Nell Minow AWFJ.org Sophie Deraspe shows the enduring vitality of eternal themes with this modern adaptation of the Sophocles play. Dec 2, 2021 Full Review Boyd van Hoeij The Hollywood Reporter Deraspe earns kudos for making a 2,500-year-old play feel vital, contemporary and cinematic. Dec 16, 2019 Full Review Peter Howell Toronto Star "Antigone" views the plight of desperate immigrants through the lens of Greek tragedy, wringing compelling drama out of a situation that too often resembles catastrophe in the real world. Rated: 3.5/4 Dec 5, 2019 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson AWFJ.org This is a stunning film of ethical and emotional ambiguities. Dec 2, 2021 Full Review Sandie Angulo Chen AWFJ.org Antigone is an extraordinarily affecting adaptation of Sophocles' ancient Greek play set in modern-day Quebec. Dec 2, 2021 Full Review Leslie Combemale AWFJ.org Not all performances reach the heights of lead Nahéma Ricci. She drives the film, and there isn't a momentary chink in her emotional armor nor a second in which she isn't entirely present in her character's truth. She is transcendent. Casey C Its was a good movie, it took the original story and made it modern, by changing the characters, setting, and story structure. But there are many things that bugged me, and or confused me. First off I like the way they change Polynices why of being killed/being arrested, and Antigone's why of making her statement, by helping him escape. But the movie writes out and writes in new characters, like Creon, he's my favorite character from the original play, but in the movie he's just, there. The original main villain just, there. But it does make the new characters important like the grandmother, her character does feel right in the story, and was very well written. The chorus being rewritten as her peers and internet was an obvious choice, but a smart one at that, creating a new way for the chorus to be relevant to the plot, and in a bigger way. But the one main thing that bugged me was the end, the sex scene felt off and unwanted, and the airport scene felt abrupt. Yes i see the symbolism with the children and all, but it made the movie feel like it was missing something, an ending. The original play had a ending that closed the story, with Creon and his fate, but we never got Antigones fate and the other characters as well. I could be looking to much into it, but for a story that make you want to know more it was bound to happen. But overall a pretty soild movie.
