What to Know

Critics Consensus

Benefitting from astonishing Australian locations and Charlize Theron's raw athleticism while skimping on the finer details, Apex doesn't mark the zenith of survival thrillers but makes for a solid entry.

A fun watch, but it's hard to imagine people returning for a second viewing. It’s an efficient, effective horror movie about the limits of the human body. But it’s almost entirely experiential and in-the-moment, with no deeper levels to unpack or explore. Go to Full Review

Charlize Theron gives everything she’s got to a survival thriller right out of the cliché spin cycle, but there’s no contest when she pits herself against a raging Mother Nature and Taron Egerton’s psycho cannibal killer. They never had a chance. Go to Full Review

It is thrillingly made -- lean and mean. Go to Full Review

It's an enjoyable cat-and-mouse thriller with two terrific leads. Go to Full Review

Director Baltasar Kormákur keeps things moving relentlessly through the jungle, ravines and whitewater rapids, the stars are believably well matched and Jeremy Robbins’ screenplay has a couple of nicely gruesome surprises. Go to Full Review

Egerton is clearly having a blast here. It’s fun to see him lean into another chaotic performance.Apex is an interesting title though, considering this film is only in the middle of the food chain of cinema. Go to Full Review

Jessica C. @Jessieisreal28 6h In my opinion this movie was very well done. It had great actors in it. The plot was very well done. It a cat vs mouse type of movie. The beginning was very sad to me . I liked the chasing aspect of the movie. I’m so glad that they found the bodies and gave some families closure. See more Kyle M @RT77296778 6h A rather smooth climb with minimal grips above a circumstantially familiar path, forgoing psychological complexity in rightfully twisting its visual patterns, but generic enjoyment stemming from the performances of its well-cast leads respectively emits captivating strength and spiraling corruption in an impeccable clash. (B) See more mohammad rezaa N @RT85889734 9h Taron Egerton delivers one of the greatest psycho performances in cinema history. Especially that scene where he plays a song, tells them "You have until this song ends," and then starts dancing around like a complete maniac. Everything is excellent: the scenery, the tension, the performances... The visual effects are so convincing that you genuinely worry something might have actually happened to Charlize Theron. That’s technical mastery. Then you’ve got some Woody Allen movie where two people sit in a New York apartment all day talking crap like: "Why am I disappointed in life?" or "Freud once said…" and critics worship it and hand out perfect scores. But a movie like Apex, where characters are desperately fighting for survival in brutal wilderness with relentless pacing, real stunt work, and breathtaking cinematography, gets dismissed as: "Oh, it’s shallow. Weak story." See more Grant H @RT95929188 13h The scenery is good as is Theron but the weak link for me was Egerton whose idea of playing a psychopath is to wander around with his mouth agape. He looked like a little boy pretending to be bad. Whoever wrote the script deserves censure for some childish dialogue e.g. Ben screaming out "You’ve broken my leg" when it’s obvious to all. The interaction between the two when they were "forced" to cooperate is ludicrous in the extreme. Those involved in this entire exercise appear to have been interested only in the money. See more Mike J @Spidey37 21h The fantastic Charlize and charismatic Taron are the primary reasons to slog through this misery "thrill ride." Taron's backside gives it one star all on its own. It is a tough watch though. See more Ry N. @RyGuy 1d An adventure seeker finds herself being hunted down under. The rock climbing was more thrilling than the psychotic Aussie.
