What to Know

Critics Consensus

Benefitting from astonishing Australian locations and Charlize Theron's raw athleticism while skimping on the finer details, Apex doesn't mark the zenith of survival thrillers but makes for a solid entry.

A fun watch, but it's hard to imagine people returning for a second viewing. It’s an efficient, effective horror movie about the limits of the human body. But it’s almost entirely experiential and in-the-moment, with no deeper levels to unpack or explore. Go to Full Review
Peter Travers The Travers Take May 15
2.5/4
Charlize Theron gives everything she’s got to a survival thriller right out of the cliché spin cycle, but there’s no contest when she pits herself against a raging Mother Nature and Taron Egerton’s psycho cannibal killer. They never had a chance. Go to Full Review

It is thrillingly made -- lean and mean. Go to Full Review

Its aim is to deliver two hours of tension, spectacular scenery, and an action star in top form. And when Charlize Theron is in top form, that's more than enough. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The last act contains some of the film’s biggest surprises and departures from expectation, which makes Apex, if not exactly original, at least a particularly potent assemblage of familiar pieces. Go to Full Review

Even though it follows a familiar formula, "Apex" is an unpretentious, bare-bones affair that wisely focuses on Theron’s physical performance and the mercilessness of the beautiful but unforgiving landscape. Go to Full Review

Brandon K. @BKiller 14h Fun action movie that I enjoyed. Tense moments had me gripping the arm of the couch. Bad guy gave me “split” vibes. See more Cinema S @cinema_sensei 20h This one has a solid survival-thriller setup and enough tension to keep things moving. The remote setting works well, and some chase and survival sequences are genuinely entertaining. But the story becomes predictable, the characters aren't developed enough, and the execution doesn't fully match the premise's potential. A decent one-time watch, but nothing particularly memorable. See more Norbert R @RT57828849 1d Far too charged with the message for "modern audiences". The love interest/spouse died within the first 10 minutes to make way for the independent, strong female lead. Eric Bana had more of an extended cameo than a role in this movie, to lure people in. Literally every other appearing male character is inferior trash, to illuminate strong females characters way from victim to victor. In the end, strong female character rejoices for having shaked off the chains of a relation with a male. She even admits, that she might have killed her spouse for that reason deliberately. Sorry, that' s way to much misandry, even in 2026. See more Quinn M @quinnmckibbin 1d Apex is pure chaos from start to finish. The action scenes are genuinely insane and over-the-top, but the whole thing is so wild that I honestly don't even know how I feel about it. It’s an absolute fever dream of a movie, not sure if it's actually good or just totally off the rails, but it definitely keeps your attention. See more Arthur R @RT88125953 4d Egerton's performance steals the show here. Without much to work with, he's effective as the villain, and there are some fun scenes and great scenery, but aside from that, there's not much else to keep you engaged. Lower end of the food chain with this one, one viewing is more than enough See more Eamonn O @OReilly2140 Aug 13 Beautifully shot in sumptuous wilderness but cliché-ridden with atrocious dialogue. Theron displays impressive physicality but it smacks of girls can do anything Tom Cruise can do. Her lead character is impossible to like, masculine, rude and hard-headed, making the viewer almost root for the cannibal trying to devour her liver. Ultimately strong shades of Men bad, women good.
