Lady reporter Augusta "Gusto" Nash (Claudette Colbert) poses as the wife of imprisoned American pilot Tom Martin (Ray Milland) to save him from execution by Spanish fascists. The gesture lands her a front-page story and the praise of her boss, Mr. Phillips (Walter Abel), who assigns her to cover the impending war. Martin and Nash begin a romance that may be torn apart when conflicting career obligations pull them in different directions, in the wake of Hitler's invasion of Poland.

Otis Ferguson The New Republic When they start talking with too much feeling and punk poetry about the litt! fellows in Spain, Poland, Norway, France, without really caring a damn or devoting enough of the picture to making it real, it gets embarrassing. May 7, 2024 Full Review John C. Flinn Sr. Variety Because the film is splendidly directed by Mitchell Leisen, and acted not too seriously by Miss Colbert and Milland, the mixture of love and war takes on reality and conviction. Oct 2, 2023 Full Review Philip K. Scheuer Los Angeles Times You'll like it, I promise. Apr 29, 2019 Full Review P.S. Harrison Harrison's Reports A first-rate entertainment. One is made to laugh, is held in tense suspense at times, is thrilled, and is made to feel the sufferings of his fellowmen. Oct 2, 2023 Full Review George Orwell Time and Tide Its photography is somewhat above the average, with some very good aeroplane shots at the beginning. Ray Milland and Claudette Colbert play everyone else off the stage, but Walter Abel’s performance also deserves a mention. Oct 2, 2023 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Claudette Colbert gives a charming performance as a reporter who falls for Ray Milland's soldier of fortune Rated: B Jun 29, 2011 Full Review Read all reviews

Steve D The script isn't much but the cast makes it fun. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Colbert speaking the words of Billy Wilder. I couldn't wish for something better. This film is hilarious, romantic and patriotic. Love it. As usual, Wilder does not fail to be brilliant and Colbert is the best comedic acterss pretty much ever. If only they made films half so good today. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member This film confirms that Claudette Colbert was Hollywoods most consistently good comedienne - and Ray Milland is surprisingly good too - his best comic performance. But how can they go wrong with a Billy Wilder/Charles Brackett-script and an Oscar-winning story?Claudette Colbert also gets to sing a little of the imortal Dream Lover that Jeanette Macdonald introduced in The Love Parade opposite a former Colbert co-star Maurice Chevalier. So enjoy - it's great fun :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Claudette Colbert plus a Billy Wilder script. I love this film. It's hard to find, but worth looking for.
