Critics Consensus

Some of the evil magic is gone as this trilogy capper dispenses with most of the scares, but Bruce Campbell's hammy charm and Sam Raimi's homage to classic visual effects make for a fun enough adventure.

Peter Besas Variety Blending almost nonstop violence with humorous parody, Sam Raimi’s latest excursion into horror-kitsch should prove a crowd-pleaser for the mall trade and perhaps a mite beyond. Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer Replete with thumping horse hooves, the battle cries of lusty men and the banshee screams of the living dead, Raimi's movie comes at you with a noisy, jokey swagger. Its hero even says "groovy" and gets away with it. Rated: 3/4 Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune Here's the problem: Bruce Campbell's character is a complete stiff, and so is everyone else he meets who isn't a special effect. The result is that we couldn't care less who wins any battle in the movie no matter how inventively photographed. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Brian Bisesi Horror Movie Club Podcast Raimi's special effects and camera work really elevate this pulp, fantasy film and make this an immersive experience. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...a daft but enjoyable romp…catnip for fans of Campbell, this is probably his finest hour, making a droll, lantern jawed hero with a deft penchant for quips and an ability to accessorise Rated: 3/5 Feb 9, 2024 Full Review Bob Ross Tampa Tribune Bruce Campbell, the rugged star-survivor of The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2: Dead Before Dawn, takes his most incendiary trip yet in Army of Darkness, a hilariously extravagant sequel to those low-budget, tongue-in-cheek fright flicks. jacob We need more old school horror movies back in theaters. It was great seeing it among fans. Everyone laughed and enjoyed it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/30/23 Full Review Melissa M Out of the Evil Dead franchise this is the only movie that's not oversaturated with blood, gore, & sex. There are some scarish moments in the film. Like when Ash's fighting the monster in the pit. And when Good Ash has to fight Bad Ash. And the battle scene where Ash & King Arthur's men are fighting the deadites. But out of the three movies in the Evil Dead trilogy this one is more comical than the other two. Like when Ash is fighting his mini me's. And the part where Ash has to get the necronomicon. And there are three books. And Ash has to figure out which one is the right one. A lot of the movie is an homage to Ray Harryhausen. Who was One of the best special effects creators Animation & stop motion animation. The other two Evil Dead movies were definitely cult classics. And two of the best horror movies of all time. But this movie you could actually watch with tweens. This movie is not dated. And definitely still holds up today. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Jeepers C Another favorite from back in the day. I remember watching this movie with a bunch of friends. It was a great midnight 🍕 and oregano movie. Everytime I rewatch this movie it takes me back to easy days of my youth. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review Kevin P Most of the scares are gone, but that hole is filled with plenty of comedy to go around. Granted the humor is kind of hit-or-miss, but fortunately the hits are far greater than the misses. Bruce Campbell is charismatic as ever, albeit kind of dickish during the first act. Though seldom, the action scenes are a lot of fun. Not a masterpiece, but a fun conclusion to the Evil Dead trilogy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Mike S Well I remember watching this movie back when it was on the big screen back in '92. I was a fun and enjoyable movie back then. Definitely worth watching. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
