Critics Consensus

Some of the evil magic is gone as this trilogy capper dispenses with most of the scares, but Bruce Campbell's hammy charm and Sam Raimi's homage to classic visual effects make for a fun enough adventure.

Peter Besas Variety Blending almost nonstop violence with humorous parody, Sam Raimi’s latest excursion into horror-kitsch should prove a crowd-pleaser for the mall trade and perhaps a mite beyond. Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer Replete with thumping horse hooves, the battle cries of lusty men and the banshee screams of the living dead, Raimi's movie comes at you with a noisy, jokey swagger. Its hero even says "groovy" and gets away with it. Rated: 3/4 Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune Here's the problem: Bruce Campbell's character is a complete stiff, and so is everyone else he meets who isn't a special effect. The result is that we couldn't care less who wins any battle in the movie no matter how inventively photographed. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Despite abandoning the horror elements of its predecessors, it's still an entertaining showcase for Bruce Campbell's comedic chops and physical prowess. Rated: 4/5 Sep 12, 2025 Full Review Adrian Martin Film Critic: Adrian Martin Relocating Campbell and the nasty, invisible spirits who are his nemesis back in medieval times, the film is a riot of corny postures and camp lines. Rated: 3/5 Jul 30, 2025 Full Review Brian Bisesi Horror Movie Club Podcast Raimi's special effects and camera work really elevate this pulp, fantasy film and make this an immersive experience. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/23/25 Full Review David S. Army Of Darkness, a strange entry in the Evil Dead series, I just have to write a review here. A dark fantasy, written by the man who created the franchise, this is still a great movie, though it's far more humorous than scary, but during the scary season like this, it's one of the best films of its type and it's aged well. I love it!!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Frank T An instant cult classic sequel to the Evil Dead. Bruce Campbell is on his A-game, in a funny off beat horror classic.
