Apres Romanzo Criminale, ce film montre que les films policiers a tendance historique made in Italy sont des oeuvres interessantes a plus d'un titre. Ici, l'interpretation de Alessio Boni et celle de Michele Placido (le real de Romanzo Criminale justement) dominent tout ou presque, car la realisation de Soavi est aussi de tres tres haut niveau (cfr ce plan final simple mais subtil et eloquent). Du divertissement de tres haut de gamme en apparence, un vrai film reflechi et abouti en profondeur.
