Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex Art of a Hit hopes to strike the right note but, unfortunately, leans into a few too many cliches for its good. While attempting to create a unique story is admirable, the execution leaves the experience feeling oddly flat. Ben D A 90s rock band with a hit or two travels to a Cheateau in France to isolate themselves and record under the tutelage of producing guru, Charlie (Charlie Saxton). The band doesn’t seem to have any money or recent success, so it’s odd the label (which then just drops them during the trip?) would pay for such a maneuver. As expected, lead singer, Ryan (Ryan Donowho. Yes, that’s his real name), becomes haunted by ex-band member, Miles (Rob Raco) and the other band members (Tim Jo, James Earl, Allie MacDonald, David Valdes). *Here Be Spoilers* The “it’s all in his head” trope has been done 10,000 times before and with much greater effect. Even by the end, we don’t understand why Miles is haunting Ryan. He simply leaves the band to pursue a solo career. Moreover, why exactly is Charlie so special? We probably could’ve used a hit or video or something he masterminded as a frame of reference. The horror elements don’t really make sense and the ending leaves you dumbfounded. The concept had a lot of promise, but this movie just isn’t very good. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Jonathan S I was impressed with the setup. The location, the cinematography, the acting are above average for an independent. I appreciate the music. I found the Rick Rubin producer character to be very interesting. The first act does a good job of setting everything up ... but as we move into the second, it doesn't provide any payoff. The scares are barely horror. Then the ending... I just can't ... this non-ending ending that's just left hanging as an epilogue is weak. I rather see a cliched ending or semi-predictable M. Night twist. I would totally accept the scooby doo ending. Nobody wants this ending. It's even worse since they waste the climax and since we've slow burned the entire time, I've written head canon that's far better that the ending by the time we get there. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Iamwhoi M The music was good; just not enough of it. The story wanders, without making a lot of sense; then the ending just kind of happens, with nothing resolved. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review nilufer e I'm not sure if it was my fault because I didn't pay enough attention but this movie didn't speak to me. Started as full of cliches and turned out to be boring. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Valerii Ege D Aiming to be the next Studio 666, Art of a Hit intriguingly dives into the anxiety of feeling insignificant, but despite its attempt at depth, it falls flat with its lackluster pacing and nonexistent climax, ending up as a below-average film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Janet L Being a senior citizen and growing up with Creedance and the Eagles, I nonetheless appreciated the deep musicality and larger themes around the artistry, success and self-worth in this movie. Beautiful cinematography also. Highly recommend. J. Lucca Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
