Critics Consensus

A would-be franchise-starter that will anger fans of the source material and leave newcomers befuddled, Artemis Fowl is frustratingly flightless.

Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) Lots of things happen but nothing unfolds. It's like watching a feature-length trailer for a film that doesn't exist. Rated: 1/5 Nov 26, 2020 Full Review Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) The mischievous glint in [Judi Dench]'s eyes is Artemis Fowl's only nod to irony and self-awareness. Rated: 2/5 Aug 11, 2020 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald A sense of indecision hangs over the whole exercise, starting with the screenplay, which has four names attached. Nobody seems to know how funny they're meant to be. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 17, 2020 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews One of the worst feature films Disney has ever created. As much as it hurts me to write this, Ferdia Shaw delivers one of the worst young performances I’ve ever witnessed, but the embarrassment is shared by everyone involved in this atrocious mess. Rated: F Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies A fruitless franchise launch for a series I doubt we will ever see again. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Jeffrey Harris 411mania This Artemis Fowl is neither criminal nor mastermind. He's just a kid who sort of reacts to things throughout this movie. Audience Member Yeah, no. Idk about this. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Timothy S I pirated this film and I still want a refund Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review Brayden B It definitely has some entertaining moments. But other than that it's pretty much boring and lots of plot holes were made throughout the film Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Nathan W I really enjoyed this even though most people hate it. This movie is great as I love fantasy and it’s amazing to watch, it’s hard to do films so if people think that this is awful then I would like them to film a movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/01/24 Full Review Dale R Based on the novel of the same name by Eoin Colfer, a young boy must rescue his kidnapped father with the help of some unusual characters. This film was delayed in release for extensive reshoots and the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually released on Disney+. This is just a bad film and might be a great example for film students to see on how not to make a film. There is way too much narration, from exposition to describing character motivations and introductions. Character interactions are brief, unless there is an action scene. There are significant acting irregularities, like the actors had to come back to the character after a long hiatus for reshoots. Spatial awareness is non-existent as characters jump to random locations. Josh Gad did get a few laughs out of me as a positive. Save yourself the trouble and avoid this film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Nicholas S If you loved the Artemis Fowl books, don't watch this film. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
