Gerhard K This was a difficult documentary to make. Having been born in Shanghai in 1957 and under house arrest since 1958 until our deportation in October 1961, the musicians in this documentary lived through the cultural revolution. They grew up in the hay days of Shanghai in the 1940's and early 1950's becoming enamoured by Jazz - a departure from classical music which all musicians played. Inspired by visiting U.S. Naval vessels post 1945 and their amazing Jazz bands, these musicians began learning the Jazz classics. Then the Cultural revolution hit and the band had to disband and be sent out into the country side. To be able to tell these stories opening, yet still have a love of music well into their 80's, Uli Gaulke did a fantastic job to find the intimate and authentic stories of these musicians through the ages. The amount of trust he had to build with them and the poignant memories of their lives are captured here for ever. There is no anger, perhaps some disappointment in their lives, but ultimately this is a story of how passion can overcome anything. The closeups - the stories, the experiences ... for anyone who has experienced this side of Asia - and for those who wonder what happened, here is how people endured and triumphed. This is a must see for sure !! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Read all reviews
