Cath Clarke Guardian It's a sometimes hard-hitting, always heartfelt film - and star Bel Powley is an actor with an umami-style knack for adding depth to any film she's in. Rated: 3/5 Feb 16, 2021 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It is relentlessly bleak, but within that tonal bleakness there is some really striking imagery. Sep 14, 2019 Full Review Rex Reed Observer Filmmakers never seem to run out of footnotes to history during World War II. This one is better served in the pages of a novel. It doesn't work on film. Rated: 1/4 Jan 11, 2019 Full Review Jamie Healy Radio Times Without those redemptive highs or soul-destroying lows to stir the emotions, the overall effect can be a bit numbing, making this a rather forgettable tribute to the countless victims of Soviet oppression. Rated: 2/5 May 9, 2024 Full Review Daisy Leigh-Phippard Screen Queens Its ultimately confused about what it wants to be and who its about, likely leaning too faithfully on its literary inspiration text. But it is an important story to tell, and will hopefully attract attention from a teenage audience. Feb 21, 2022 Full Review Rob Aldam Backseat Mafia Brings the horror and suffering to life. Isabel B The book was good but the movie was NOT it. The ending sucked…the whole movie did. Andrius saved it. If you watch this good luck Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/05/23 Full Review Cassie H Movie sucks. Ending was truly disappointing. Whole thing was disappointing. Nothing like the book. Only good part was how hot Andrius. Kretzskey was nothing like the book, very disapointed they made him rude and crusty. Would not recomend to my worst enemy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/23 Full Review Jill M It butchered the book! I know can't be exact, but the ending was even changed! I do not recommend it if you've read the book Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member One sadly portrait of what was the soviet comunist regime occupation on the Baltic republics and the tirany of the red army rules in Lithuania under the orders of Stalin. Great movie. Must watch #Lithuania #Freedom #URSS #Gulags Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member This adaption is unfortunately bleak and unsatisfying. The potential was wasted with World War II cliches. The film lacks substance compared to the fantastic story it's based on. The plot never gives our characters time to develop. The only thing this movie achieved right was the casting. In conclusion, the inspirational story has been turned into a dull and boring big-screen adaptation! It's not worth watching.
