Audience Member In the short film, "Asparagus," Charles O'Hair plays the lead role as Daniel, the father of a teenaged boy and girl, married to his long suffering wife, Rebecca, whom he treats harshly. The family is hosting Daniel's brother, Guy and his wife and daughter for Christmas dinner, an awkward gathering that brings up family dysfunction among all parties. As Daniel, Charles O'Hair infuses an initially unsympathetic character with humanity as he shows a range of emotion from anger and condescension to despondency and fear. Daniel's character wants to be the authoritarian patriarch of this rag-tag family group, but Daniel loses control as his family members fail to live up to his expectations/standards. Charles plays a very believable role as Daniel, and we feel his despair when the dinner party falls apart. The allusion to Asparagus as an unlikable vegetable that we "ought" to eat because it's good for us is an apt metaphor for this family. Daniel wants his family members to be the "good for you" role model wife, daughter, son and prodigal brother while he himself dispenses paternal forgiveness. At the end, Charles's Daniel can't hold up the pretense and asks for forgiveness himself. Charles brings breadth and life experience to his character roles that makes the audience relate to the person he brings to life on stage. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
