Wayne K Aspen Extreme is the kind of film that could easily have been cheesy, saccharine and downright artificial. But by some miracle or incredible twist of fate, it’s actually pretty fantastic. It’s not the most original film in the world, some of the plot points you can probably guess far ahead of time and a few of the characters are as one dimensional as you can get. The world of skiing is, as far as I know, not one that’s been deeply explored in the cinematic world, but it’s a sport I enjoy taking part in, despite my lack of ability. But the film works so well because, at its hearts, its not about skiing at all. The film could have been about 10 pin bowling and it would have still carried the same message. Its about the trials and tribulations of friendship, and of living a life that you’re simply comfortable with, rather than one you actually want. Paul Gross and Peter Berg are perfectly cast as the handsome ladies man slowly coming to regret the direction his life is taking, and the socially awkward best friend who’s started to realise how depressing it is living in someone else’s shadow. The conflicts that rock their bond feel natural and believable, and not just random arguments or misunderstandings throw in whenever things get dull. Some of the plot turns I genuinely didn’t expect, and as it approached it’s climax I felt liked I’d really gotten to know the characters, and wanted to share in both their pain and their triumph. It’s not a film I ever hear people talking about, and if it’s the skiing conceit that’s putting you off, let me assure you that whether or not you enjoy or even care about the sport, Aspen Extreme is a movie that’s got far more heart than it has any right to have. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/05/24 Full Review Josh G If you ski and you don't like this then...I don't know about you. Yes the plot is a little ridiculous but it's so rewatchable. Skiing is the easy part Carl. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved this movie since I was a teen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a great cheesy 90s ski move Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Downhiller cult classic. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
