      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

June Diane Raphael and Casey Wilson are sharp comedic performers, but their co-written script gives them little to work with in this meandering farce.

philip c It comes out of left field. Was refreshing to watch something that was unexpected. Almost like a "Bill And Ted" adventure. I was impressed because I didn't know any of the actors. I did think it would have been awesome 20 years ago with Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A hilariously, uniquely and relentlessly silly comedy from writer-stars Raphael & Wilson. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/28/21 Full Review Audience Member If this movie had been written by a man, you'd all call it a classic. This is an absurdist comedy. If Adam Sandler and Happy Gilmore had made this, frat boys everywhere would be reciting it in their dorms. This is classic gender politics in comedy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Dumb and dumber without being funny Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A less intelligent version of Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. I didn't really laugh but it was fun to watch. More for the train wreck aspect. Still, I'd rather watch this than Trainwreck anyway... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm not sure if the goal here is spoof or pay homage to the far sharper 1990's movie, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. But it impossible not to think of it as we watch this pair of gleefully unaware friends make their way thru an unnecessary road trip to a beauty pageant. Raphael and Wilson play so well off of each other and are clearly having so much fun it makes this little movie impossible to not enjoy. Silly and goofy fun. Justin Lowe Hollywood Reporter Ill-advised and amateurishly executed, Ass Backwards begins with a passably funny concept and runs it into the ground within 20 minutes. Apr 27, 2020 Full Review Christy Lemire RogerEbert.com As with any kind of episodic or sketch comedy, some gags land more effectively than others, although you'll likely find a line or a beat or an image that makes you laugh from start to finish. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 8, 2013 Full Review Neil Genzlinger New York Times The road adventures they have along the way aren't funny, and once they reach the pageant, the comic payoff you're hoping for never materializes. Nov 7, 2013 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Common Sense Media The movie's one joke is that they don't quite realize how pathetic they are. This kind of joke could work if the characters were charming and had the ability to win over other characters, but these women remain stupid and annoying throughout. Rated: 1/5 Apr 27, 2020 Full Review Matt Patches Hollywood.com It helps that Wilson and Raphael both come from sketch comedy. They're well-versed in hyper-specific characters -- and ones we want to spend more time with, just to see what trouble they weasel their ways into. R Apr 27, 2020 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie With a script so painfully unfunny it's hard to imagine that Raphael and Wilson (who got some of their funding for the film through Kickstarter) never had anyone tell them they were working with absolute dreck.
