      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

At War doesn't have the answers to the struggles it highlights, but proves no less compelling in the raw urgency with which it depicts the modern worker's plight.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) [Has] shades of Norma Rae and the Dardenne brothers' Two Days, One Night, except this is an even more piercing film. This film is angry. Oct 2, 2019 Full Review Scott Marks San Diego Reader The performances and camerawork are natural and unrehearsed, to the point where one wishes this had something more to show for itself than expert mimicry and an inharmonious act of violence to send audiences packing. Rated: 2/5 Aug 10, 2019 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Brizé's bid for political urgency may not be as complete a work in terms of character richness and scope, but it's a worthy companion piece in the effort to make films in a turbulent time that speak the truth about the plagued dignity of everyday people. Jul 26, 2019 Full Review Matt Cipolla Film Monthly Brizé and Olivier Gorce's script ends up in a rut of martyrdom, stomping its authenticity with an ending of little to no emotional precedent. Rated: 3/5 Jul 25, 2020 Full Review Sebastian Valencia Cine Premiere At War is a well written account of the weight of fighting against injustices of the upper class. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: 3.5/5 May 1, 2020 Full Review Glenn Heath Jr. San Diego CityBeat While the inherent rage of At War is necessary, so to is some fundamental understanding of the character's deeper motivations. By stripping this story of any nuance, Brizé dips his toes into the iconography of propaganda. Aug 1, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member What is the point of this movie? If you like to watch a labor union squabble with management about a plant closing then this is the movie for you! And then nothing happens. For 2 hours you can watch the workers argue with management, politicians and themselves. There is no reason for this film to exist. The entire story is told in the first 5 minutes. Then it is just numbing repetition. Plant closing, workers angry, repeat, repeat, repeat. What a waste of film. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Edwin G Our 3 year old loved it! And so did Mommy n Daddy! Good Job Disney! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/20/19 Full Review razvan p well directed, well played, good conflicts, ending promotes insane value system and stupidity. the plot couldve made it more plausible for it to happen.. it did the opposite. its one thing to make a person without a family, with alcohool problems etc selfsacrifice for a cause.. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review dominique d Finally a movie that shows what it is to fight for jobs (lifes) in a world that cares only about money and enriching the already rich Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Very emotional movie, showing how the workers, the employers and the State relates to each other in our liquid modernity (as the philosopher and sociologist Zygmunt Bauman call it). Industries are free to move to "cheaper countries", workers have no guarantees, and the State can't do any better than trying to use the force over the workers to impose "the peace" (since going against the industry/capital could make the situation even worse).
