What to Know

Critics Consensus

Although the film isn't as bad as feared (it wasn't pre-screened for reviews), it's not that good, either. Most noticable flaws are the sappy romantic cliches and lack of chemistry between Gere and Ryder.

Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Richard Gere’s phoniest acting tic has to be the way that he tosses back his head and laughs, in ”spontaneous” delight, at his romantic costar. Rated: C Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Emanuel Levy Variety Utterly banal, Joan Chen's tediously sappy romance is a kind of modern-day Love Story (a better film!) with a "twist": Richard Gere's suave lover is old enough to be Winona Ryder's father. Rated: C- Jul 21, 2007 Full Review Tim Cogshell Boxoffice Magazine Melodrama is bad enough, contrived melodrama is worse, and badly written contrived melodrama is Autumn in New York. Rated: 2/5 Jun 5, 2002 Full Review Jae-Ha Kim Jae-Ha Kim "Autumn in New York" is made to tug at our heartstrings. But with its rote story line, the film proves to be little more than pretty eye candy in the form of stars Richard Gere and Winona Ryder. Rated: 2/4 Jul 27, 2023 Full Review Mark Steyn The Spectator You can't help but be aware of the structural flaw in this tale of redemption. Kirsten W There are a few moments that I love in this movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review babarizam There were many wrong things about this movie 1- script 2- acting 3-delivery Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review Blu B So it's like a Terms of Endearment and Harold & Maude hybrid....just not as good as those. Boring genric music and everything else about it subpar. It goes from creepy/awkward with the relationship to just flat out boring in the middle to just ok at the end. Ryder & Gere are passable but don't really have any chemistry together. None of the characters are that likeable, it feels like its' trying to tug on heartstrings, and feels like there isn't really any clear story between the two of them and mostly focuses on Gere being a jerk. But he's never likeable like say High Infidelity, he just keeps making dick moves with no real explanation why. It feels so forced how they get together out of nowhere and how she's not creeped out at all. Also, Ryder doesn't look sick at all so it's hard to believe she's terminally ill when she looks peak and fit 99% of the time. The middle gets so boring focusing o him sleeping with his ex and drags adding nothing and I have no idea why she'd get back with him after that. Honestly, even if your a big fan of any actors in this, skip it anyway. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/24 Full Review John A Not a bad film like many critics have made it out to be. The leads do lack the resonant kind of chemistry a film like this needs. This early 2000's wanna-be tearjerker has moments of visual flair and Ryder is an almost perfect "it girl". Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/23 Full Review Maud K 48-year old sex addict romances a terminally ill 22-year old. Ew. Works slightly as a New york City travelogue. Even Elaine Stritch struggles. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/14/23 Full Review Brett B One of most emotional movie I've ever seen Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews
