What to Know

Critics Consensus

Although the film isn't as bad as feared (it wasn't pre-screened for reviews), it's not that good, either. Most noticable flaws are the sappy romantic cliches and lack of chemistry between Gere and Ryder.

Richard Gere’s phoniest acting tic has to be the way that he tosses back his head and laughs, in ”spontaneous” delight, at his romantic costar. Go to Full Review

Utterly banal, Joan Chen's tediously sappy romance is a kind of modern-day Love Story (a better film!) with a "twist": Richard Gere's suave lover is old enough to be Winona Ryder's father. Go to Full Review

"Autumn in New York" is made to tug at our heartstrings. But with its rote story line, the film proves to be little more than pretty eye candy in the form of stars Richard Gere and Winona Ryder. Go to Full Review

May 16 The cinematography is stunning, the atmosphere is dreamy and elegant, and Winona gives one of her most tender, heartbreaking performances. That fragility, that soft defiance — it’s pure magic. The film feels like a poem in motion. Who cares if it’s melodramatic? That’s the point. It’s about fleeting love, mortality, and beauty. And the soundtrack? Devastating in the best way. See more Kathryn V Feb 2 Dissapointed in Gere doing this movie, some of the scenes and huge age gap. The movie just didn't work at all. Tacky bad movie. See more Kirsten W @kirght 03/22/2024 There are a few moments that I love in this movie. See more babarizam 01/28/2024 There were many wrong things about this movie 1- script 2- acting 3-delivery See more Blu B 01/24/2024 So it's like a Terms of Endearment and Harold & Maude hybrid....just not as good as those. Boring genric music and everything else about it subpar. It goes from creepy/awkward with the relationship to just flat out boring in the middle to just ok at the end. Ryder & Gere are passable but don't really have any chemistry together. None of the characters are that likeable, it feels like its' trying to tug on heartstrings, and feels like there isn't really any clear story between the two of them and mostly focuses on Gere being a jerk. But he's never likeable like say High Infidelity, he just keeps making dick moves with no real explanation why. It feels so forced how they get together out of nowhere and how she's not creeped out at all. Also, Ryder doesn't look sick at all so it's hard to believe she's terminally ill when she looks peak and fit 99% of the time. The middle gets so boring focusing o him sleeping with his ex and drags adding nothing and I have no idea why she'd get back with him after that. Honestly, even if your a big fan of any actors in this, skip it anyway. See more John A @ExcessMale 10/26/2023 Not a bad film like many critics have made it out to be. The leads do lack the resonant kind of chemistry a film like this needs. This early 2000's wanna-be tearjerker has moments of visual flair and Ryder is an almost perfect "it girl".
