Audience Member . . . a sensitive bodacious romp through the souls of some supernaturally never-to-be average slightly broken young people on the way to the real party; a steady ongoing down to earth thread of realism and mysticism in a young people's movie about the 'real' overcoming the 'false' in their eccentric lives evolving in and around them in a night of growing personal relationships amongst new friends attracted by the moment of each other's presences'. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member So instead of mumblecore, we get stumblebore? Crumblecore? Dumbledore? They all sorta fit. Notice I didn't use 'snore' in any of those vague pseudo-terms. That's cuz there's way too damn much dialogue in this thing to sleep through it. Well this happened, partly cuz it sounded decent, was short, and has Adelaide Clemens in it. I really enjoyed her work in the series Rectify and in Rabbit, a 2017 movie. Max and Peter would be pretty hard to take for long. One's all kneejerk defensive jerk who is still trying to live like a slacker and justifies his selfishness and irresponsible acts repeatedly. He also kinda made me feel like Giamatti in Sideways- a know-it-all trying to convince you how sensitive he is. Peter has poor people skills, except when he's inebriated, it seems. But Brooke and Halley are great. For the time we're with them, we see two interesting people with some real depth to their characters. Graynor is esp. good in a rather muted, guarded role. She actually seems like someone who has been 'hurt a lot', is willing to keep trying to get it right, but is understandably wary. There's promise, potential, whathaveya here for director/writer Angarano, but maybe mix things up some, Mike. This was very white of ya. 2.2 stars Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member I never got too invested in the navel-gazing 20 something characters but the performances were good. The plot kept me engaged just enough to keep watching a fairly short feature even as I had little interest in the main characters' lives. Every time the interactions -- and it's a very talky movie -- got close to something real, I got lost in pronouns or unspoken history between the characters but it seemed like they just retreated to trite apologies and excuses. While it's always better to show rather than tell, this film needed more exposition to get the audience engaged and caring about the one and a half dimensional players. John Fink The Film Stage A spirited, micro-budget indie that recalls the New York City-based work of early Woody Allen with notes of John Cassavetes, Whit Stillman, and the Safdie brothers thrown in for good measure. Rated: B- Jun 12, 2020 Full Review Andrew Bundy The Playlist A promising directorial debut about the jokes we use to mask grief. Rated: B Mar 17, 2019 Full Review Joey Magidson Hollywood News Michael Angarano stars as well as writes and directs this charming New York tale. His work in front of and behind the camera is compelling and steady. It's an assured debut. Rated: 3/4 Mar 11, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
