Audience Member A warm and unpretentious glimpse into the tradition of shape note in the American south. Includes an overview of the history of the Sacred Harp songbook (which is explored in even greater detail in the DVD extras) as well as an overview of how shape note singing works. Beautiful music, inspiring movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting quick look at the history of shape notes and the earliest form of music in America. Quaint, low budget documentry. Filled with music that you probably will not hear most anywhere else. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw this a couple weeks ago and just totally blown away at the power of this form of religious music. It ain't no Gregorian chant, this comes from the depths of your soul! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Not that interesting as a documentary. I would have been more interested in the history and theory behind sacred harp music, especially its roots in medieval and renaissance Europe, than the hour-long discussion of how the singers felt about the Sacred Harp and what an extraordinary experience it is to take part in a sing. Gets three stars because the music featured in the movie is gorgeous. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member If you've never heard of this style of music, the documentary helps lay out the history (a bit dryly) and shows how the music has so thoroughly moved its participants. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting documentary. This slice of Americana is well worth your while. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
