Anton Bitel Film4 There is little subtlety in the madcap time-travel comedy, but Baba's film affords a view of the massive recessionary changes undergone by Japan in a mere two decades, while dreaming of a future return to the nation's former affluence. Feb 25, 2013 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Japanese sci-fi comedy as Mayumi goes back in time (via a bright yellow washing machine) to rescue her mother Mariko, who's trying to prevent present-day money meltdown by stopping a politican in the 90's from bursting the economic bubble Cue jokes about mobiles, dance fashions, body-con fashions and spend-spend-spend and it all adds up to a silly and very entertaining film, even if you don't get all the Japanese jokes and cameos. <img src="http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/io9/2008/11/picture_1.jpg"> . Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A really good time travel comedy with a young female following her mother back in time to 1990 to save Japan's economy before the bubble burst. Instead of a telephone box or even a car to go back to the past they use a washing machine by Hitachi!!! The filmmakers faithfully recreate the Japan of the early 90's from the music to the clothes. A good little twist at the end as well. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member oh ryoko hirosue.... *jizzed* Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A nice movie in the style of "back to the future", except that the plot actually makes sense here. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I think I saw my first '90s nostalgia movie -- only it was for Japanese '90s nostalgia. LOL Not a bad little time travel movie that takes place before and after their economic bubble. Makes ya think what we might be in for with our bank failures and current credit crunch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member A light-hearted comedy that has fun with itself while at the same time looking at the history of Japan in the bubble days of 1990. The time travel gimmick works well as Mayumi (Ryoko Hirosue) goes back from 2007 to 1990 in order to stop a legislation which causes the bubble to burst and 2007 Japan to be in massive debt. While in the past we get the requisite flashback scenes as Mayumi deals with life in the past such as huge brick "cell phones" and MC Hammer music. Comedy, a little action, and even a little drama adds to the overall fun of this movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
