X O Maybe I'm stupid, but I can't follow where it is going. What's the point? And so much swearing, especially with the 3 girl family. It's so weird. I can't see this focusing anywhere. The character of Ben is beyond a loser. Why are the girls talking to him for? He's a complete loser. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review Dylan C entertaining but not phenomenal Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/29/23 Full Review L D The movie was more about female "best friend" relationships than about teen romance. This would have been fine by me -even celebrated -except the "best friends" weren't like any female best friend relationship I've ever had or seen. Sorry to disappoint but real female friends don't cuddle in bed or grope each other's breasts. If a woman wrote that relationship, I swear she is a closet lesbian in denial. Plus, for me, personally, I found all the drug use infused with Daria derived snark (as a substitution for intelligence) was unpleasant. I didn't like or relate to most of the people in the film. I did, however, like the setup. What would happen if, somehow, the laws of nature, friendship and women were broken and the new girlfriend became best friends with the old girlfriend. That was an interesting question and setup. And I did like how the movie portrayed the heartbreak of first love lost. There were times when my heart ached along in sympathy. But beyond seeing Dylan Sprouse making out with everybody (which is always appreciated), the film left me with a depressed view of today's youth. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/22/23 Full Review Allen R Avoided cliches and gave us some great character relationships that were funny and heartfelt. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/22/23 Full Review ChrisJ F I threw this on to pass the time and feel like it's definitely enjoyable enough as long as you accept it as the teen movie that it is. It's shot well and most notably, the acting chemistry between the two girls feels quite genuine throughout the majority of their ups and downs. Despite the simple and rather movie-esque plot writing, their performances really held the film together much much more than I expected. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/05/23 Full Review Rogue 5 While it does a good job being a romantic comedy it has some lazy writing and a predictable storyline. Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Metro Newspaper (UK) What truly zings about Banana Split, though, is that it's a Gen Z romcom actually written by a teenager, with all those accompanying imperfections. That and its ending totally hits the sweet spot. Rated: 4/5 Jun 5, 2020 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) Banana Split is like a really poor episode of Riverdale, but less compelling. Rated: 1/5 Jun 5, 2020 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian The fundamental premise of this never really looks anything other than muddled and implausible, and certainly doesn't free up the relationship between Marks and Liberato in any satisfyingly comic direction. Rated: 2/5 Jun 3, 2020 Full Review Jesse Hassenger Nylon [Banana Split] keys into the heedless rush of meeting someone on your exact wavelength. Rated: B Jan 28, 2021 Full Review Matt Pais MattPais.com Underrated ambitious, and fun as hell. Rated: B+ Aug 6, 2020 Full Review Alex Flood NME (New Musical Express) If you're looking for a quick hit of wholesome comedy to remind you why life is still worth living (even in these hellish times), then Banana Split is great. But as a calling card for its writer-star Hannah Marks, it's even better. Rated: 4/5 Jul 23, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
