Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com A fairly rote crime drama but a fascinating glimpse of a world in transition. Rated: 3/4 Sep 22, 2023 Full Review Kat Halstead Common Sense Media Barber pulls from film noir and adds themes around the #MeToo movement, LGBTQ+ rights, and the COVID-19 pandemic to what is otherwise a fairly run-of-the-mill crime thriller. Sep 11, 2024 Full Review Steve Morrissey Radio Times The plot ultimately hinges on questions of loyalty, but director Fintan Connolly and his co-writer Fiona Bergin are keener on juxtaposing the different eras than relating what's going on. Rated: 3/5 Aug 17, 2024 Full Review Abbie Bernstein Assignment X Solid if unexpectedly PG-13-ish Irish private eye thriller. Rated: B Oct 4, 2023 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews It turns into a compelling character study rather than a hard-boiled detective story. Rated: B- Sep 27, 2023 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Although it treads familiar narrative territory, this gritty and evocative Irish thriller benefits from a solid performance by Aiden Gillen in the title role. Avindu G It's a story of redemption with misconceptions ageing and intelligence dawning. Barber tells us how difficult it is to heal the wounds of lives and how victims of difficult trauma struggle alone while sharing the same spaces. A great family drama that promotes acceptance and understanding in a unique smart manner. No superficial action sequences just raw and risky private detective work. Movie takes a good look into the characters surrounding the tragedy. Excellent performance by Aidan carrying the whole story effortlessly above the level of average. A slow story to enjoy especially for the uniqueness. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review Jelisije J A film where the plot and story is intertwined with the main character sexuality......I found better detective movies to watch instead. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review Annie M It's short. It could be longer it could be more in depth. But it's good, with solid twists/turns etc Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Kirti s Story about a private investigator who gets a case to find a missing girl and who is battling his own personal issues as well in the movie. His personal life is focused too much in the movie which I think was totally unnecessary. This movie doesn't have any thrills or mystery. My advice, skip it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/02/23 Full Review Taylor K "Barber", a film set in the heart of Dublin, is a cinematic exploration of the human condition, wrapped in the guise of a detective story. The film stars Aidan Gillen as Val Barber, a private investigator. The narrative unfolds during the initial months of the Covid lockdown, a backdrop that adds an additional layer of isolation and introspection to the proceedings. Aidan Gillen's portrayal of Barber is a masterclass in acting. His performance is nuanced and layered, capturing the complexity of his character with remarkable subtlety. He brings to life a man who is solitary not by choice but by circumstance, shaped by the culture that nurtured him. Gillen's Barber is not just a character on screen but a living, breathing entity that audiences can empathize with. The film delves into themes of power and corruption, juxtaposing past and present Ireland. It subtly addresses the #MeToo movement and presents a backdrop of abused young women, adding a contemporary relevance to its narrative. The film doesn't shy away from these heavy themes but instead embraces them, weaving them seamlessly into its narrative. In conclusion, "Barber" is an absorbing watch. It offers a thoughtful exploration of its themes and boasts a strong performance from Gillen who is wearing well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review Jonas S Meh. Interesting attempt at meaning with fairly down-to-earth plot lines, but in the end it feels inconsequential. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
