Audience Member Strange concept and double-casting of Depardieu but notable for early appearances of Adjani and Depardieu who clearly show their remarkable charisma and chemistry Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A classic specimen in film-noir, this movie describes its characters in dark, morally ambivalent world. There is nothing negative to say about the acting performances what so ever. Isabelle Adjani is stunning. Despite the fact that this film is not mainstream, I was never bored. That surprised me since I am a rather a "friend" of action movies in general. Impressive new experience of film-noir. The plot could have had a bit more in it, but other than that, I liked the movie. The movie has a special way of portraying its vision. There is a crime, loneliness and claustrofobia described in colorful visually strong methods. I found the story fascinating. The idea of substituting a person with someone else who looks and sounds just like her may not be that far fetched when despair and longing become king. The movie is art. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a nifty little flick, Adjani is a always a pleasure to watch and Depardieu does a fine job. Adjani plays a woman whose fiance is murdered by a hit man who looks very similar to her fiance. She doesn't seem to notice this, and all sorts of intrigue and whatnot ensue. The major problem with the film is that Depardieu plays both the murdered man and the killer. It's actually rather distracting and really takes you out of the film especially since he doesn't seem to be as recognizable to any of the characters in the film as he is to us. Other than that, this is fairly enjoyable little film with a few really great scenes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member A very romantic movie, and such a personal work that the Director chose a French cast and set the action... in Amsterdam, in the winter. However, the main characters are asocial and the cover up of homosexuality is a very clear issue. Quote from the movie: "Don't forget that the onlything that people are interested in, is Love". Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review walter m "Barocco" is a politcal thriller about Samson(Gerard Depardieu), a former boxer, who is in love with Laure(Isabelle Adjani). To escape their lives of desperation, Samson has agreed to do an interview for a large sum of money with a local newspaper that will adversely affect one of the candidates in a bitterly contested political race. Then, for another sum of money, he agrees to keep quiet for the other side. Needless to say, this attitude is not going to make a lot of people happy. Samson is intercepted at the train station, just as he and Laure are about to make a break for it... As I've said before, I don't mind a movie that hits the ground running, just as long I know what's going on. It is even more true in "Barocco", where it feels like the first twenty minutes have been cut out of the film and we are left trying to decipher who all of the characters are. (If it had focused purely on the young couple, it might have just worked.) And in a complex story as this, we need all the help we can get. Depardieu playing two roles does not exactly help but he is rather amazing. But I do like how the sense of economic desperation is used as a backdrop. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
