Jamica C @RT93362616 07/07/2024 A must see. This was absolutely an intense drama movie, with great acting that makes you believe the characters. It is one of My favorite classics & hard to find on any streaming network to watch again & again. Please share if you know where this movie can be watched! See more Lisa L @RT15284110 10/17/2023 Superb acting. Excellent movie. See more Steve D @RT35616104 09/17/2023 It is pure melodrama but well acted melodrama. See more 12/16/2021 Showtime television and Angelica Houston directs Jena Malone's feature film debut starring next to Jennifer Jason Leigh, Christina Ricci, and Dermont Mulroney I remember reading the book by Dorothy Allison back in middle school for English class It was one of the toughest stories to digest The movie starts off with 3 people driving then get into an accident Anney is the sister of two; who is almost killed in the car wreck and she gives birth to a girl named Ruth Anne 'Bone' Her baby was certified as a bastard child by the state of South Carolina Anney marries a kind gentleman Lyle Parsons Things change drastically though as Lyle dies and she ends up married again only this time to a hotheaded abusive monster Glen He takes advantage of Bone by physically and mentally abusing her because of his erratic behavior, bad job record, and tough love from his own father These two women face the toughest portions of their lives living through grief, hardship, resolve, bravery, and torment For a tv adaptation this is some of the best acting from Jena Malone and Jennifer Jason Leigh Very harsh emotions to deal with given that this a middle-American setting of poverty-stricken citizens No woman should be forced to choose between her children and her husband, we all do terrible things, forgiveness seems almost impossible, love blinds us to everything, our children should not have to suffer for anyone, can daughters be like their mothers? A difficult movie to absorb but a terrific adaptation nonetheless Shows a lot of stuff of womanhood and the struggles of maternal life in a poorer part of the world wondering if anyone can depend on one another See more 03/23/2015 I was hoping for a more light-hearted film with themes of child abuse but instead, it just wallows in sentimentalism. The girl and her curious sister both undergo adversities. But I also didn't like the violence this film depicts. Also, I think that the actress that played Bones is a little too young to play a 12-year-old as she was about 10 at the time. But I do think she did good in the role. There's not much memorable characters here, the father keeps remanding his daughters to call him daddy. Though, I can relate to him and his desire to beat little girls. The mother is doting of her husband. Bone is a clichéd and not very compelling character, letting her father hit her instead of running away in the bathroom!!! Not even anybody else does much to help. There were some rushed scenes and the characters, I don't think were very convincing. It was just too unnecessarily violent and sick. I know that it was trying to send out a message that children are getting treated like this, but still, for the director to show these type of scenes and have the film be so sick that it makes me go "What the frack?" several times, I couldn't get into it.
