Batman (Val Kilmer) faces off against two foes: the schizophrenic, horribly scarred former District Attorney Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), and the Riddler (Jim Carrey), a disgruntled ex-Wayne Enterprises inventor seeking revenge against his former employer by unleashing his brain-sucking weapon on Gotham City's residents. As the caped crusader also deals with tortured memories of his parents' murder, he has a new romance, with psychologist Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman).

Critics Consensus

Loud, excessively busy, and often boring, Batman Forever nonetheless has the charisma of Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones to offer mild relief.

Peter Bradshaw Guardian The whole thing is just that little bit wackier, perhaps closer to the 60s TV version - although Two-Face's burns are nastier than that show would have permitted. Rated: 4/5 May 17, 2019 Full Review Carol Buckland CNN.com Batman Forever is a visual tour de force, a knock-your-eyes-out effort. But it overdoes, overkills. And what starts out exhilarating ends up...exhausting. Jan 5, 2018 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune It doesn't add up to much, but it's certainly entertaining. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 16, 2017 Full Review Zaki Hasan IGN Movies A unique chapter in the Dark Knight’s cinematic history — a stylistic detour that dared to show Gotham in a different light. Literally. Jun 25, 2025 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast Batman Forever is a cartoonishly fun time, but only truly comes to life when Carrey's Riddler is on screen. Rated: 3/5 Jun 17, 2025 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast Kilmer is a better Bruce Wayne than a (bland) Batman, but Kidman acquits herself well as a horny doctor. Carrey is a hammy delight, bringing a surprising physicality to the role and overshadowing Jones' Two Face in every scene. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 11, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Michael Morales It was great to see it on the big screen again. It was reliving my childhood. I hold tribute to the late Val Kilmer for doing an awesome performance as the Dark Knight. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Kenneth M it felt very nostalgic! i remember when I first saw it in theaters when it first came out! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Sal Amazing sound! cinema experience at its finest! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Jose Arrocha 29 years later, this movie remains as awesome as it first was. I’m instantly back in 1995 and 8 years old again. Val Kilmer gives a great and 3 dimensional performance as Batman and Bruce Wayne. He remains among the best to ever do it and the best of the Burton/Schumacher era. Though the movie has its camp, Batman’s psychology is the heart of the film. Joel Schumacher took care of the character. The movie also tells a fairly accurate Robin and Two Face origin. And Jim Carry is gives it everything he has. This is one of the best Batman movies there is. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
