Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint If this sounds far-fetched it is. Bawaal is what happens when a breezy Imtiaz Ali romantic travelogue crashes into a speeding German tragicomedy. Jun 24, 2024 Full Review Emily Tamkin Slate Bawaal is vapid, at best, and at worst callous in its indifference to anything beyond the surface. Aug 2, 2023 Full Review Anupama Chopra Film Companion It trivializes an unimaginable horror. Jul 27, 2023 Full Review Rahul Desai Film Companion A clear-eyed misfire. Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Lachmi Deb Roy Firstpost I am not saying that Bawaal is a movie that doesn’t need to be watched. But at the same time, being a Nitesh Tiwari film, I believe that it could have done better. Rated: 3/5 Dec 21, 2023 Full Review Sakhi Thirani Common Sense Media This romantic drama directed by Nitesh Tiwari is disappointing and problematic in equal measure. Jessica C Original storyline. Really good acting. Loved the connection made between WW2 to present day. I've watched this multiple times already. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review Waniya S Absolute cinema, really educational and makes you reflect on your life and the way you view it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Arnab B Watched with 0 expectations and actually didn't bored me like other bollywood romantic movies. I'll recommend for one time watch for this time pass movie with a short positive message. This movie is just recieving over hate and is definitely far from worst movies of Bollywood. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/18/23 Full Review John B Well worth watching. And fun. Yes, there were some very unusual metaphors but nothing that someone with a little cultural curiosity can't handle. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Horrible movie make parallels between a failing marriage and the Holocaust. Only good acting was Janhvi Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/03/23 Full Review arvind s Nitesh Tiwari's latest has been receiving a lot of flak for it's comparison of certain events from WWII to the issues a couple have in their marriage. Well, this was bound to be far fetched irrespective of the writer-director handling this. But there is a lot more to Bawaal than just this & trust me it is not as bad as everyone claims it to be. All the flak is out of context. Set in Lucknow, Ajay, a history teacher is very conscious about his image. So much so that he doesn't like being seen with his wife, Nisha in public because she suffers from fits. But when his job is at stake & he decides to travel to Europe to do an immersive lesson on WW2, reality hits him. Amongst all the junk that is being released, Bawaal is a breath of fresh air. Very out of the box but still much better than all the drivel (read remakes and big budget fiascos) that is released. Varun Dhawan & Janhvi Kapoor, both are pretty good in their respective roles. I don't see why they are receiving so much hate for their performances. Manoj Pahwa, who plays Varun's father is great as always. I understand the analogy to the gruesome events of WW2 may seem outlandish but a lot of it is being shown out of context on social media. The Auschwitz part could have been skipped though. But I loved the journey of the married couple, how they change over time & how less of a brat, Ajay becomes. Though it was a bit caricature-ish, I also enjoyed the Gujrati family track. Bawaal may be a little too out of the box for some when it comes drawing parallels, but it is time well spent. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
