Keith Dewhurst Guardian My feelings on finding myself almost alone in praising the Beatles television film Magical Mystery Tour are amazement, and the sad conviction that as a mass the public is more stupid and ignorant than it is as individuals, and does not like to be told so. Mar 21, 2018 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader As 60 minutes of self-indulgent psychedelics, it's nearly impossible to watch. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Magical Mystery Tour might not be a masterpiece or have a real script but it's still a film that's worth watching--plus, the music rocks. Jan 25, 2022 Full Review Peter Canavese Groucho Reviews Entirely larky...for Beatlefans, what's not to like? [Blu-ray] Rated: 3/4 Oct 10, 2012 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy A big, nasty, ugly, boring mistake. With killer musical numbers. Rated: 3/10 Sep 16, 2010 Full Review TV Guide A must-see for Beatles buffs and anyone interested in how the '60s looked as they were happening (rather than in slick, retrospective recreations); others might want to take a pass. Booga L Let me begin by saying I am a big Beatles fan. Hard Day's Night, Help, Yellow Submarine are all worthy of their immense talent. I've seen Magical Mystery Tour years ago but barely remembered it. Recently I found the entire movie online and gave it another look. I was shocked at how bad this film is. Well, it's almost unwatchable. Seriously. Even as a fan, I saw very little merit to it. It was such a poorly made film. There is no story line that I can describe. That being said, even the musical moments aren't the best. I can watch Hard Day's Night, Help, and Yellow Submarine over and over and always enjoy it. This thing is just amazingly bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Yakking With F i used to have the dvd from 2012 i dont like magical mystery tour i give it a 3 of 10 its was release in cinemas in the 1970s by New Line Cinema Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Nicholas L This influenced some great directors and the music is obviously brilliant. This is a great piece of british boxing day TV. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review Joel H Don't do drugs, kids. I think that is the main lesson I learned from Magical Mystery Tour. And especially do not try to make a film and improvise a bunch of scenes while under the influence of drugs. I am a big fan of The Beatles, but this poor excuse for a movie is one big unfunny disaster. Every time one of their music videos started I breathed a sigh of relief because it was a welcome break from the cacophony of unintelligible muttering and sound effects. This made-for-TV mess disappointed audiences back when it first aired in 1967, and it's still able to disappoint fans of The Fab Four today. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/23 Full Review CKB First: if you insist on viewing this unfortunate POS made by talented people who should have known better, DO NOT waste money on the Blu-ray version, since the original print it's made from is so poor in quality. Second: This is an extended example of Paul McCartney bullying his chums into doing something all music-hallish and royally stupid against their wishes, and their recently-deceased manager Brian Epstein wasn't around to curb his excesses. McCartney's dumb 'Fool on the Hill' segment shows what a narcissistic twit he could be on his own. George Harrison later said Magical Mystery Tour was "an extended home movie," since the whole thing was largely unscripted and lame as hell. Periodically we are subjected to the Fab Four trying to do wacky things like Monty Python would soon succeed brilliantly at, but without Python's intelligence, education, or acting chops. John Lennon (always the group's barometer) seems to hate this project, and puts on his cheesiest constant smile ever to get through whole scenes -- creepy! Ringo is the only one who is actually funny (once again), but he gets stuck having yucky scenes with his 'aunt' (who is a variation on Paul's 'grandfather' in HDN). McCartney has assembled a group of goofy/ugly characters, presumably in sympathy with 'regular folk,' but instead demonstrates his clear disdain for them. This was the point where the Beatles started losing their creative focus, and it's painful to watch. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/23 Full Review Tanline666 A masterpiece. Better than any of Kubrick's films, it is so random and I love it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
