In the midst of the economic boom of the 1920s, the Democratic Party machine picks irresponsible state senator Jimmy Walker (Bob Hope) as its candidate for mayor of New York City. Elected by a huge margin, the charming Walker bites the hand that feeds him by threatening to root out government corruption. Meanwhile, the love triangle between Jimmy; his estranged wife, Allie (Alexis Smith) ; and his Broadway-star girlfriend, Betty Compton (Vera Miles), threatens to topple his administration.
