Critics Consensus

Becky isn't quite able to sustain enough intensity to fully take advantage of its premise, though it serves up entertainingly nasty thrills for genre fans.

Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review It has a certain retro throwback pleasure for anyone still longing for the days of VHS...squishy gore effects, a nostalgic charm... Oct 8, 2020 Full Review Cath Clarke Guardian The lesson here is don't mess with the inner rage of a teenage girl. But Becky's crazed kills get more and more gimmicky, and there's nothing in the script to indicate what has turned her into a pint-sized death-dealer. Rated: 2/5 Sep 24, 2020 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) This is a film of gimmicks, most of them rather tired. Sep 9, 2020 Full Review Paul Lê Nightmare on Film Street On the whole, Becky is a well-paced and action-driven distraction with an unlikely hero. It's a perfect vehicle for its two leads, who are certainly suited for these kind of out-of-the-box roles. Rated: 8/10 Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Kristy Strouse Wonderfully Weird and Horrifying While not entirely original, the violent revelry imbued in Becky's core and the terrific lead performance make it a worthy watch. Jun 18, 2023 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...sporadically watchable yet predominantly disappointing... Rated: 2/4 Jun 12, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Lavish C If you belong to those who can shut off the brain completely to enjoy nonsense for the sake of it, you might find the idea of a gory version of "Home Alone" entertaining despite the irredeemable amount of nonsense. I'll highlight just few, in random order: - the convicts are initially shown as extremely dangerous and evil, yet once they are in her home ALL of them with no exception exude zero scary vibe whatsoever. On the contrary they look rather cartoonish, and tonally out of place for what would be a credible behavior from such kind of people. - yet they still are CLEARLY dangerous, so why does her brother enthusiastically say "we're going for Becky!" like he's informing his friendly neighbors, after his mother CLEARLY just lied to hide Becky's existence? - the leader of the gang hears a noise, finds the window open, and just looks outside without looking below or at the sides? FFS, are you a villain who's under pressure to find something or are you playing seek and hide with your kids and pretending that you want to find them? - suddenly, he does the ONE thing that he absolutely should have not done: he kills her father in front of her after his most dependable teammate had CLEARLY said "no more kills", when he had ZERO reasons to kill him, because he could have EASILY overpowered or threatened him or shot his leg. - ALL OF THEM should be strong, with sharp killer instincts developed from years of street violence and prison fights. They organized a prison kill to get transported somewhere else and managed to escape overpowering several ARMED guards. Yet suddenly once they are with this family they are stupid, slow, have ZERO tactical and strategic thinking, get easily pushed down with just a little push from a 13 y/o girl or from her tied-up father who despite being just a weak nobody manages to quickly stun the giant wrestler with one hit in the face from which the giant takes 30 seconds to recover from, while the leader gets pushed to the floor and struggles like a Panda to get on his feet again???? WTF!? Is this a home invasion horror thriller or a parody? - the dog hater goes to Becky's tree house to get the mysterious key from her. He has a gun. Opens the door, sees the dog. He hates dogs and already killed one but this time he closes the door and calmly asks Becky for the key, almost politely actually, instead of shooting the dog!? Then she throws the key (actually just a coin) and he, who's been a complete psycho until now, very calmly comments "nice throw" and goes to search the key leaving the kid with room to escape, instead of getting angry, taking out the gun and threatening the kid with killing her dog if she doesn't come don and find the key!!!!??? Hello!? Then she gets on this EXTREMELY LOUD thing to jump on him, which takes LITERALLY (I counted) FIFTEEN seconds until she hits him, including 5 seconds of loud angry scream, and yet the dude is completely oblivious and reacts (very goofy) only at the last millisecond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????? There's more. MUCH more. Including absolutely PATHETIC LAUGHABLE generic motivations from the "gentle giant" to let her escape. It's a shame. This had SO MUCH potential. But was handled SO INCREDIBLY BAD, with so much superficiality and carelessness. They made a second and are making a third. DELUSIONAL! I've read the synopsis of the second. Just the first paragraph is the epitome of nonsense bad writing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Js S Kevin james needs to stick to comedy.. As usual the idiot critics rate completely different to everyone else. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/30/25 Full Review Justin T Why do so many films cast comedy actors in serious roles? It really ruins the mood. Kevin James is about as threatening as a teddy bear. It’s not just Kevin though, none of the cast except Lulu Wilson are right for their roles. Becky is awesome as a character and the casting of Lulu is so good but the rest of the cast don’t fit the roles and the characters are dull. Otherwise it’s quite engaging although a little slow and repetitive in places. The car crash looked fake. The story isn’t very good either and the ending is especially disappointing. It’s like a beautifully made and very violent Home Alone (1990) but also flawed. It’s a good film let down by bad decisions. The incredible titular character is sadly squandered. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Denis B The frustration and sorrow in Becky portrays a realistic grief of loss and in turn a response absolutely warranted Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/25 Full Review Ralph R Becky is a campy, over-the-top revenge flick that’s surprisingly fun. The premise of a little girl outsmarting and taking down a group of dangerous criminals might seem ridiculous, and yeah, there are plenty of moments where logic takes a backseat, but it works. Becky’s resourcefulness and sheer determination make her escape and revenge satisfying to watch. The movie leans into its absurdity in all the right ways, with scenes that had me shaking my head but still enjoying every second. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is part of the charm. Sure, some parts are far-fetched, but hey, it’s a movie you just go with it. Overall, Becky delivers on what it promises: a wild, entertaining ride that keeps you hooked, even if it bends reality a little too much. Definitely one I’d rewatch when I’m in the mood for some fun, campy revenge Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/30/24 Full Review Holland W Good idea with EXTREMELY poor execution. Kevin James as the main antagonist was laughable. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/24 Full Review Read all reviews
