Critics Consensus

Beerfest features some laugh-inducing gags, but is too long and the pacing too uneven to form a coherent, functioning comedy.

David Jenkins Time Out Beerfest is a film that appears to have been conceived on the back of a beermat and its trashy direction, nonexistent plot and dismal comic mugging would seem to suggest that preparations progressed no further. Sep 23, 2006 Full Review James Swanwick Empire Magazine Fans of Broken Lizard's previous work will enjoy this beer-fuddled effort; for anyone else it has its moments, but is best watched through beer-goggles. Rated: 3/5 Sep 23, 2006 Full Review Paul Arendt BBC.com While we'd probably be exaggerating to claim that Beerfest is the least funny film ever made, it's undoubtedly top ten material. Matt M Just a fun movie to watch! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Jacob B Look at me subverting so many expectations by watching and reviewing a raunchy mid-oughts comedy in October instead of something spooky. Hey, the film focuses on a Fight Club-esque version of Oktoberfest after a visit to the genuine article goes awry and the protagonists explicitly mark the date as October on their calendar, so I'm counting it. "Then why was the film released in August?" To avoid getting its ass kicked by the type of films people watch during the month of October, though it sadly didn't take box office-wise. Beerfest is stupid fun. It's by no means anything mind-blowing and I'll admit those damn dirty critics do have a point about the uneven pacing but the characters are likeable, the jokes that land REALLY land (including a parody of the trope where a character just happens to have a twin as an excuse to keep the original actor around) and the eponymous festival does look quite exciting. Admittedly, I don't drink and doubt I'd be caught dead in a place like this (and if I were, it'd probably be for reasons unrelated to alcohol poisoning), but you can't say the production designers did a half-assed job at immersing you in this secret world. The climax, for something that's meant to be a parody of sports films, is fun and surprisingly exciting. I do want these guys to win and the filmmakers do know how to make these events both funny and, for an R-rated comedy made on a relatively small budget, visually exciting. Who knew that guzzling down beer could make for a suspenseful climax? The best, most underrated R-rated comedy of 2006? No, my heart still belongs to Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. But Beerfest honestly ain't half-bad either so who knows? Maybe this Broken Lizard troupe's other films are worth being given the benefit of the doubt. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/06/25 Full Review xpig332 B Definitely a stupid fun movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review Brittany P I absolutely love all the guys from Broken Lizard 🦎 Comedy so it's a NO BRAINER for me to see these guys back together ❤️ fills my heart with the giggles till its running over.... if you love those stoner type comedies and the Super Troopers movies you'll love this one for sure! Lots of laughs and raunchy humor! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Kevin P A funny love letter to Oktoberfest that holds up surprisingly better than one would assume from that raunchy 2000's era (and a lot longer at nearly 2 hours, for better or worse). The cast is very likable and they all share solid chemistry. The beer trials are memorable and the German villains are easily the best part. It's a dumb fun drinking comedy that will put you in a good mood if you're just looking to relax. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review Read all reviews
