What to Know

Critics Consensus

Andrew Bujalski's third effort will test the patience of some filmgoers, but it represents a warm, funny, and honest introduction to the mumblecore movement.

Richard Brody The New Yorker Bujalski’s abiding fascination with and respect for work twists ironically around his characters’ preference for its straightforward demands over the open-ended ambiguities of love. Mar 10, 2023 Full Review Joshua Rothkopf Time Out Rated: 2/5 Nov 16, 2011 Full Review Kate Taylor Globe and Mail It is typical of Bujalski's finely wrought observation of their lives that the film ends, as it began, with a moment in which Lauren is poised, indecisively, on the cusp of a decision. Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 8, 2011 Full Review Jason Anderson eye WEEKLY Andrew Bujalski ought to be more than a critical darling by this point. Rated: 4/5 Apr 6, 2011 Full Review Peter Keough Boston Phoenix Don't expect intensity of any kind in Bujalski's films; the emotions range from mild annoyance to bemusement, but within that minimal palette he's a master. Rated: 3/4 Jul 6, 2010 Full Review Adam Lippe Examiner.com Beeswax can be summed up by one lingering shot, where the camera focuses, for no particular reason, on Maggie Hatcher's armpit hair. Like armpit hair, Beeswax is sweaty, unpleasant, in need of cutting, and without a point. Jun 7, 2010 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member I lasted ten minutes. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Whether or not a person likes this slice-of-life film will depend almost entirely on how closely he identifies with the central characters; the film examines the everyday drama of a couple of hipsterish thirtysomethings as they navigate their relationships and jobs. There is much to be said about mumblecore; just not here. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member A beautiful quiet film. Performances are great, very subtle & naturalistic. In contrast to his other films, this features predominantly women which is interesting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow this was hard viewing. Rarely have I sat through such a dull film, and this had potential, that's the worst bit. I am not someone who enjoys blockbusters and explosions, so no one can claim I don't get "slice of life" films, generally speaking, I do. But this is so tediously dull and nothing happens. There is no point at all to this story. The cast do well with what they have, and I liked the setting at the vintage clothing shop. If they had have given this an actual plot, I think I would have really liked this film. As it is, I feel like I just sat through a really boring day at work listening to other people talk crap. I would really like my 2 hours back. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Boring as hell. Not horrible, just unwatchable. How critics like this is beyond me. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Starts off a bit boring, but ends up a bit interesting. I'd probably get along well with the sisters.
