When I watched it more than a decade ago, I really, really liked it, but I didn't think it was the masterpiece it is. I can also see a number of reasons why I didn't get into it in the beginning, and a lot of reasons I am loving it way more this time. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy really bring those characters to life in so many subtle ways, a myriad of body language cues that turn this movie magical. Linklater is a brilliant writer-director, but credit has to be given to Kim Krizan as well as the actors who supposedly rewrote a whole lot of the dialogue. One might wonder how the hell they managed to make so many scenes that can be the best scenes in their individual movie in this one single movie. Sweet cakes and milkshakes... See more Mariana T @M.Tezeta Jan 27 I don't know what it is about this film that's so mesmerizing: - The simplicity of the story: a simple premise, yet developed with such passion. - An impeccable script: from the very first line of dialogue (which was in German and I didn't understand), I was captivated by the introspective and intelligent conversations. - The characters: Hawk and Delpy bring to life likeable young people in just the right measure. You know how this story is going to end, but you stay to suffer with them, because you know that a part of you (a very hidden part) believes there will be a future for them both. In short, it's a cheesy film, so what? It's so much more than that... The beautiful landscapes of Paris, the glimpse into the future of youth, the unwavering faith in love, an introspective walk, beauty in simplicity... all of this makes it a film worth watching. The situation they find themselves in would be unusual all these years ago when this movie came out- today seems even more like a fairytale, yet the whole movie I felt like I was an uninvited observer, desacrating someone’s intimate encounter.
