Peter Bradshaw Guardian It is the lightness of this film which is still charming; Jesse and Céline are free from everything, free from work worries or family cares, but they are also free from the gravity of cause-and-effect, the world of consequences and responsibilities. Tarek A I have always wanted to watch this unique trilogy set a decade apart. I finally started with my beloved. This is quite a sad and haunting movie. A single night can seem magical and timeless, the eternal passion and promise of youthful love, and the desire to hold onto that one magical moment at the expense of a great risk. The dialog and discussions between the masterful leads, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy seem effortless and natural, flowing like they truly know each other, and we are witnesses to a rare moment of two souls coming together. Their exploration of men, women, romance, fate, society, and expectations is all pertinent and as meaningful in 1994 as it is today - timeless questions. Their sadness as the night comes to a close is like throat choking. You know this moment won't last; you can't capture lightning in a bottle. It has to be let go of to have any meaning. I don't think the director or actors realized they would make a sequel a decade later. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review STU L I recently watched this film again on video and gained a deeper appreciation for it than I had previously. I noticed how genuine the dialogue seemed, as if we were observing a real conversation rather than one that was designed to advance the plot. It brought back memories of a similar encounter I had with a young woman I met during my student days when I travelled through Europe. Knowing I was unlikely to return, we did not exchange addresses. In short, I consider this to be the greatest screen romance of all time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Robert Jesse D I loved this movie. It was a dear, beautiful well written movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review L W One of the worst movies I ever saw, they talk for 2 hours straight. No plot, no action, it was boring, huge snooze fest Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Read all reviews
