Mr. Zhang, whose wide-screen compositions have an unfussy elegance, mostly manages his balancing act. His measured style gives the film a steady-as-she-goes ballast even as it follows impulsive, unsettled lives. Go to Full Review

In despair at a rock club, San Bao tries to eat a drinking glass. Later, in his hospital room, his bandaged mouth becomes a nice visual metaphor for the silencing of the unmonied, the voicelessness of the dispossessed. Go to Full Review
