      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Being Frank suggests Jim Gaffigan may have a real future as a dramatic actor -- if only he's offered projects that don't suffer from so much wasted potential.

Cork B I don't really fault the cast here, I think they did a good job with the material presented. But geez, this is such a messed up premise for a comedy. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/30/23 Full Review Joy B Unbelievable plot but I stayed awake. I was mostly disturbed by what the father was teaching the son and how the son was suddenly fully bought in by the end. It just didn't make sense to me but I watched it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/20/23 Full Review Karen B I thought the movie was very creative the way they took a very emotionally sabotaging situation and gave it a light hearted comedy spin. It also helped us sorta see how someone gets in that situation, obv in real life someone would have spoken up once the first pregnancy was complete and baby was at least 1 yr. I really thought the acting was good and believable and I loved the light comedy of it. I also liked the way in the beginning I couldn't stand the father and at the end I kind of felt for him. And I loved the way him and his son Philip did have a bond because of it all. In real life I don't know if a child would stay loyal through that but for the movie it was good. And in real life It is true that it can sometimes take a messed up situation to actually bring two people closer together. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/18/23 Full Review David B Classic cheesy comedy based on a dumb premise. The cast turns in a solid performance and the script, while limited, turns in some suspense and drama for the audience's enjoyment. Worth a watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/22/21 Full Review Audience Member Can't believe this only grossed 65k at the box office, this is an awesomely entertaining movie with talented actors. Really enjoyed the entire movie with plenty of drama and comedy, yet still relevant enough to believe the story line could have been a real story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Well definitely an interesting movie, It still wasn't the best Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Jamie Ludwig Chicago Reader Sure there are some laughs in this dark comedy, but frankly it's a story about an ordinary man who lies to the people he loves and teaches his son to do the same. Mar 20, 2020 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times What a jerk. But what an interesting jerk to be at the center of a quirky and entertaining deadpan comedy/drama. Rated: 3/4 Jun 21, 2019 Full Review Pat Padua Washington Post Unfortunately, in the filmmaker's narrative-feature debut, she takes the theme of betrayal and turns it into fodder for a sitcom, and not a particularly funny one at that. Rated: 2/4 Jun 18, 2019 Full Review Charles Koplinski Reel Talk with Chuck and Pam Jim Gaffigan shows us he can do both comedy and drama in this crazy film about lies begetting lies and the love a child for his father. Rated: 2.5/4.0 Nov 20, 2020 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review The movie blends humor with tragedy in a way that makes for both a wonderful profile of a gifted, misunderstood genius and a cautionary tale about being careful what you wish for in the world of the famous. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 14, 2020 Full Review Josh Goller Spectrum Culture Being Frank threatens to sink under the weight of life-altering deception played for laughs.
