Frances H The chariot race alone is worth the watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/22 Full Review Audience Member Come on. Charleston “Pry this gun from my cold, dead hands” Heston playing a Roman slave. Does not stand up very well in modern times. For that matter, I didn’t like it very much when I saw it as a kid. Much preferred “Hercules Unchained.” Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/21 Full Review victor o Marvelous! Goes to show that only Chuck Heston can bring the magic back in a remake of his epic Oscar-winning performance. GoodTimes Home Entertainment usually does animated works of various biblical stories before but this one is special because of the film's history with Hollywood. Ben-Hur A Tale of the Christ is fictional but uses the backdrop of the Life of Christ with respect and with quality storytelling that has attracted many storytellers over the years. Charlton Heston introduces and epilogues the film, being humble at acknowledging the previous versions of this story while making no mention of his epic performance, except for that old picture of him in that chariot race. As well as referencing the history of the book. From there the movie begins and it's amazing. It's not as grand as the other movies, but its audience is for children and their parents and it does do a great job in illustrating the conflict between Ben-Hur as well as other Jews during the time of the Roman occupation around the time of Christ. The story is told quicker than the previous movies, and though I haven't read the Lew Wallace novel, from what I understand, this animated movie is actually more loyal than the other films. Forty years have passed since Heston's portrayal of the role but it's still as great as it was before, better even. His animated Ben-Hur is wiser and is more believable a Christian than his cinematic Ben-Hur - a younger, vengeance starved youth. Animated Messala is a man influenced by the norms of his culture instead of the cinematic Messala - a single-minded bully, scorned by his friend's love for his nation. There is a simple depiction of Jesus, not as subtle as done in the movie but it works well. I only wish this movie had a large budget as it certainly could have been as strong as the 1990s version of Prince of Egypt did for the 1950s Ten Commandments. I certainly would have loved a better soundtrack than the generic one used in this film. But then again Chuck Heston's voice is as strong as an epic film soundtrack.
