kish b ★★★★★ Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I – The Egg of the King is a stunning, blood-soaked introduction to one of the greatest fantasy stories ever told. Even though it’s "only" the first third of the Golden Age arc and uses (now dated) 2012 3DCG blended with 2D, the film still hits like a warhammer to the chest. Studio 4°C manages to capture the raw grandeur, brutality, and heartbreaking humanity of Kentaro Miura’s masterpiece in just 76 minutes. The Zodd fight is still one of the most visceral, jaw-dropping action sequences ever animated, and the moment Guts first raises his sword to join the Band of the Falcon will give you goosebumps every single time. What truly elevates it is how faithfully it distills the soul of the manga: Guts’ loneliness, Griffith’s impossible charisma, Casca’s quiet strength, the intoxicating dream of the Hawks… everything that makes the Golden Age so devastating is already here, planted like landmines waiting to explode in the next two films. Yes, the CG hasn’t aged perfectly, and some manga purists will always prefer the 1997 series, but as an entry point (or a tragic reminder of what’s coming), The Egg of the King is flawless. It looks epic, sounds epic (thank you, Susumu Hirasawa), and ends exactly where it needs to: on the highest high imaginable… so the fall can hurt even more. A perfect tragedy in three acts begins here. 10/10. Struggler, welcome back to hell. Kentaro Miura’s magnum opus is a brutal, emotionally devastating, and visually haunting journey through a dark medieval world corrupted by demonic forces and human ambition. At its heart lies Guts, one of the most complex and compelling protagonists ever written. His journey from a lone mercenary to a man battling against fate itself is nothing short of legendary. The series seamlessly blends horror, high fantasy, tragedy, and philosophical introspection. Its theme, betrayal, trauma, love, loss, and the nature of evil are explored with raw intensity and rare narrative depth. What sets Berserk apart is its refusal to shy away from the darkest corners of the human soul, while still finding space for moments of tenderness, camaraderie, and hope. The art, especially in the manga, is astonishing in detail and scope. Miura’s panels are grand, grotesque, and beautiful all at once. The anime adaptations vary in quality, but the 1997 series stands out for its emotional weight and brooding atmosphere, despite its limited animation. Berserk is not for the faint of heart but for those willing to confront its unflinching darkness, it delivers one of the most unforgettable tales ever told in any medium. It's a brutal masterpiece that continues to inspire creators and devastate audiences worldwide. Superb characters and so much subtext. Sure the effects are bad in some scenes and the five stars may be biased since I read the manga but this is THE BEST STORY. It’s especially heartbreaking to rewatch when you know what happens at the end of the third movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/26/24 Full Review Read all reviews
