Peter Bradshaw Guardian There is a gentle, unforced artistry in Abdykalykov’s film which unfolds to the sound of distant birdsong throughout: it’s a great pleasure to have it revived. dave s It's not every day that you get to watch a film from Kyrgyzstan, but The Adopted Son (Beshkempir) is well worth the watch. The story is as simple as it gets: an infant from a large family is given up for adoption to a childless couple, as per Kyrgyz custom, and later is forced to come to terms with the fact that his parents are not his biological parents. The movie is beautifully shot in black and white and effectively explores the young boy's struggle with his identity, relying more on stark images than dialogue. While there may be issues with the film periodically transitioning to color, which tends to be a distraction, and the fact that there doesn't appear to be much in the way of any sort of concrete resolution, it is an interesting exploration of unrequited love, identity and a culture that very few of its viewers will have the opportunity to explore. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member It is very rare to see a Kyrgig film and you often become lost in the exploration of such a strange and unique world. The drama is aided by the reality of the actors' existence. They are not so much acting as providing a slice of their lives. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member WEB.
